Just wondering if anyone could help me. I am trying to convert a film from avi format to mpg format but so far all the programs I have tried leave a water mark through the middle of the screen. Does anyone know of a free download which will convert films from avi, divx etc to mpg? Thanks in advance

I want to change from avi to mpg format because I cant watch avi as the format is not supported. The films I try to watch are all avi format which is why I wish to convert to mpg. Whats a p2p network?

    A p2p network is a filesharing network. e.g: ( WWw.Limewire.com )

A programme where you can download anything (music, games appz etc.)

Oh and if you wanna change the file type then (You are gonna kick yourself when u hear this)

OPEN THE AVI FILE IN WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER THEN SELECT FILE>SAVE AS AND SAVE IT AS A .MPEG FILE

    DOY!!!!

You can watch avi films on BSplayer (bs..Lol) and Divx Player.

Oh and if it still doesnt work goto programmes on limewire
    and type CODECS

Codecs are patches for players. e.g: (a patch that makes you play certain sound types that are contained in a film or else)

    Im glad it helped.

    To your other message

When you goto save as just write the name of the film and write .mpeg nexto it. e.g FILMNAME.mpeg And Then click save.

    Yuruka

Let's have a closer look at the forum rules ;)

Next time just report the offensive post. I don't want to see you act like that to a new member again - it's uncalled for and downright rude. Part of the reason I left AD for a while was because I got sick of seeing way too many 'senior' members acting like dicks and playing mod. There was a time here at AD where every single senior member was polite and courteous......................................

Download the following codecs and you should be able to play almost any format in Windows media Player. You DO NOT need to convert the Avi files to mpeg to watch them in your computer. Don't need no cucusoft, or whatever other software(unless you want to put them on a DVD and watch them on your standalone). If you try to watch an AVI with WMP and it gives you an error, like "codec missing", you just right click on the title and it will tell you what codec is missing. You google it and download it. They are free. Whithe following pack, should have virtually no problem with any of them. There are many available, I am using these two:

    http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=294&s=95

    http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=53761&package_id=59355&release_id=274595

Here you can browse many others:

    http://www.free-codecs.com

Let me know if you have any problems. If the AVI comes with subtitles and you have the subtitles file, you can also whatch the AVI with subs using WMP.

This is how it might look your WMP. Sometimes you will be able to hear the audio but not see the video if you don't have the proper codecs installed.

Now, if you right click on the title and then "error details", it will tell you what codec you need:

If that doesn't happen, you can also download GSpot, a free application that will tell you what codecs were used to encode your AVi files. Then you just Google it.

    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_tools/gspot.cfm

You have more than you need to play all your AVI files now!

With some of them I want to watch them on my DVD player but can not seem to be able to convert them to mpeg.....I followed the advice of one of the guys and it allowed me to change the format of one film and no others even though I followed the same route. Sometimes when I play songs on WMP I get the little ! thingy.

How exactly did you try to convert to DVD? You can also get that "thingy" when trying to play if the file is corrupt, if you have a bad download.
Lke I said, you only need to convert if you want to put them on a DVD.

To convert I played the film in WMP then went to file, save as...then typed .mpeg after the film title. This worked for one film but has not worked for any others since. I am trying to put some, not all, the films I have on my PC on disc as I am running out of hard drive space so wish to convert so I can watch them on my DVD player
