I have captured video files from my sony 8mm camcorder which are saved to my hard drive as DV files. Roughly each minute of digital video time takes up over 1gb of hardrive space. How do I convert that file into, lets say, to an .avi file to compress it into something more manageable. I have almost every episode on Enterprise in in divx 5.1 avi format. Each 42 minute episode only takes up 81 mb. How can I compress (encode) my 1 gb files into what should only (ratio wise) take up only a mb, not a gb? thanks for you help frustrated in 2k3
1 gb/minute? Hard to believe that it's DV (1 hour = 13gb), rather sounds like uncompressed or lossless compressed. Anyway, to compress I'd use VirtualDub + A codec like DivX or XviD (for video stream). There's a lot of information about this in this form you'll find using the search. There are also helpful guides you'll easily find if you go to afterdawn main page.
