Problem: I capture with an ATI All-in-Wonder 9800 from a VCR through a SIMA CT-200 to an ATI .MPG file, about 350k named ABC.mpg. It will open with Windows Media Viewer and play with sound and video. When I try to convert to what I assume should be MPEG-2 to burn a DVD using either Absolute Video Converter or Advance X Video Converter they both hang up and in the destination file, there are three files, but only the audio file has content. If I end either program, all I end up with is one file which has audio, but no video content. Where do I look for the problem? Any input, even to suggesting different hard/software appriciated. Why not have a try with other software such as winavi video converter (http://www.winavi.com)? By the way, if you want to burn to dvd, you'd better convert your files to dvd format instead of mpeg2.
Thanks for the advice xiangjie. I still don't know what I was/am wrong, as I tried a third program, Xilisoft Video Converter and had the same problem, but all went well with the WinAVI program. Burned in Nero and played perfectly. I do get a message that the Quicktime codec is not present (it is), but the bottom line is it works! Again, thanks. You Can use the ATI MMC Software to Capture Directly to DVD Compliant Mpeg-2 files that do Not need to be Converted to another Format to Be Put on to DVD....You don"t want to Capture Files and then Convert them anyways because it Lowers the quality of your Captures and Take up time that can be used to do other things.... cheers
Thanks, Minion, I will give it a try as soon as I can get the ATI MMC upgrade to finish. It can't seem to verify my installation CD; such is my lot in life<G>. I also have a capaciy problem burning a file with Nero that I don't understand. It tells me a 2.9g VOB file is too big to burn, when I thought that DVD was around 4.3g capacity. Is there a good beginners intro to the various file formats and uses? How can one determine the MPEG format, (MPEG, MPEG2 etc) of a file when it seems they all have the same .mpg file designationand programs don't indicte the output format other than .mpg? If you go into the Capture settings you can select to capture in Mpeg-1 or Mpeg-2 or AVI or the ATI VCR Format it will also have specific settings for captureing to a DVD Compliant Mpeg-2 format.... So if you Know what settings you used to capture then you should know what you have Captured.... If nero says that your 2.3gb Vob file is Too big then it is because Nero thinks that the VOB file is Not a DVD compliant File and wants to re-encode it and the Video is too long for it to Fit on DVD useing whatever Bitrate Nero is useing.... I wouldn"t use Nero for authoring DVD"s as it"s encodeing sucks and it is very Limited....

(I run an ASUS K8N w/ Athlon 64 2.4g w/1g ram, about 50g free on a 10k rpm main drive and a 7.5k rpm storage drive) Is ATI's 'DVD Compliant' Mpeg-2 format suitable, or would another format work better? Yes the "DVD Complint" setting should work Fine..... I personally use "MediaChance DVDLab Pro" for Authoring Mpeg-2 files to DVD But it is a Bit Complicated for a beginner but it has Lots of Great Features.... You might like something like "Tmpgenc DVD author" beter because it is Much easier to use But it does Only make Pretty Basic DVD"s... There are others that are Pretty good for a Beginner Like "Ulead DVD Movie Factory"..... Cheers
