Hello A Newbie here with some quick questions....been frustrated toooo long and read EVERYTHING but dont know what im doing wrong...I have an older computer with windows 98 ( I know dinosaur but with dsl does the trick)..Ive downloaded several avi movies in the past, convert them with winavi to mpeg format or dvd format and can not figure out why they wont play in a standalone or ps2....Ive got movies from friends that play instantly when you put them, mine come up to a menu in my dvd player and wil not play at all in my ps2...any suggestions? I just want to convert the files to th proper format and play on any dvd player and cant figure it out..thanks for all the help!
Is it possible you haven't selected the correct region; NTSC or PAL? Basically, North America and Japan are NTSC.
sounds like a compatibility problem..... read this: there are plenty of reasons why certain dvds won't play in other players: 1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x). 2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual. 3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this: http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php some drives won't booktype, see if your drive does! 4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk! 5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch! 6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better! follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck. also read this: http://www.cdfreaks.com/print/article/113 why the +R media is better than the -R media
i usually have it set to auto with winavi converter....have to set it when its converting to ntsc to see if it works...will let you know...just frustrated any movies i get from friends play in anything i have, but mine only in the one dvd player i know will.....

To burn my movies i use cd burner xp pro 3 ..a free program....it will play on om computer fine....will play on my dvd player fine but comes up to a menu and does not autorun right to the movie like many my friends have given me...drivin me crazy but thanks for all the help! Is nero free?
i have windows 98 and tried burning through winavi converter and it just locks and goes to not responding....just wish i could know why my dvds wont autorun in any player or ps2 like any others ive been given by friends.
I thought I replied, As IHoe said. perhaps the media or burn speed. Nero isn't free but ImgBurn is, easy to use and very good. As an aside, I never had much luck with WinAvi; its own engine wouldn't burn at all and Nero always threw out errors. The burned discs played, just couldn't fast forward them. Maybe have a look at this program's trial and see if it works for you. Not as fast as WinAvi (nothing I've seen is) but very good: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/vso_convertxtodvd_guide.cfm
Many of the free burners don't do DVD Video, only DATA. That could be the problem. From CDBurnerXP Pro's site, it's not clear though: - Writes all kind of mediums apart from double-layer DVD (follows in next version). Burning video-DVDs is limited. - Create Data-CDs/DVDs
are you making dvd's or vcd's ? you say in your post that you have a cd burner, most of the newer dvd players will play vcd's
I just want my dvds to play in my ps2 or any stand alone dvd player and that will autorun when you put them in not come up to a menu...i have windows 98..and yes i do have a dvd burner....you said changin it from avi to vcd should play in any dvd player? Also cd burner xp pro 3 burns my avi converted to mpeg format just want to play in my ps2 and other stand alones...thanks for all your help
If you can get keylauncher to work on your ps2 either by modded console, swapping discs or if you have an internal hard drive and hdadvance or hdloader, you can get sms media player (Search in google) launch it through keylauncher and connect the movies via external usb storage drive (FAT32 only) or you can follow their online guide and burn dvds with avi movies on them to work
I've converted several AVI to MPEG4 with NeroVision Express. Just drag the AVI file the program and Nero does the rest. At least for me.
