Converting to MP4

    How can i convert videos to mp4 format. My iPod only uses mp4 but all the converter programs i find you have to buy or get a free trial that only converts 5 minutes. Can anyone please let me know of a way or program that i can get that doesnt charge you. Thanks

    Plenty of freeware. In fact most of the stuff that you pay for is based on free software like ffmpeg. Probably the only AVC ipod encoders that aren't based on x264 are Nero (Ateme) and Apple's.

    For an iPod you might need to remux using mp4box and the -ipod switch since Apple tried to lock out out encoders. Still no confirmation if -ipod works though. You also need to be careful since iPod's only support limited profiles for MPEG-4, AVC and aac.

    MeGUI would probably be a good place to start since it is fairly easy to use and there are iPod profiles available. Also unlike some other free encoders it doesn't use faac (no where near the best aac encoder) for the audio encoding.
