Hi, i'm using DVD decrypter to rip and trying to play video files from the HDD to an Entertainment Center through a Linksys Media Extender. The only supported formats that the Media Extender will play are MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 formats.

How can I convert to MPEG-2 from VOB? I hear that MPEG-2 is a better video quality. Is that true or should I use MPEG-1? I need it to be as close to DVD quality (as the files will be played on a 55 inch Widescreen) as possible, but must be in one of those two formats.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,,,,,,,,RamzE

Okay, nevermind. I figured that part out. I found a program called AVS video converter that works great. It will easily convert and edit vob files and convert them to mpeg1 and 2, as well as alot of other formats.

Now I'm on to the next problem. The only audio options when converting these files are mono and stereo. I need Dolby. According to wikipedia MPEG-2 supports up to 5.1 channels, but unfortunately it seems that AVS does not. Does anybody out there know of a program that does? Free programs are best but If I have to buy so be it. This whole project is on behalf of my dad who just has way too many new toys that he doesn't know how to use. He's trying to cut and crop his favorite songs from concert video's and stream them from a HDD to his entertainment center. Want's it to look DVD quality, but not on a DVD because he wants the ability to shuffle playlists and such like you would with a computer playlist. So we got him the Linksys Media Extender and have made alot of progress. Music CD's work fine, Video Looks great. Just need a program that will take those concert DVD's, convert to MPEG-2 and keep Dolby 5.1 features.

    Please help!!!!! thanks again,,,,,,,,,RamzE

You are Going about this all the Wrong way....VOB Files are just Mpeg-2 files with Dolby AC3 audio so if you want to go from VOB to Mpeg-2 and Keep the Dolby AC3 audio then you don"t have to really do anything because VOB and Mpeg-2 are the same thing accept for the Header Info....

What I would do if I were you is First rip my DVD"s as a Single Big VOB file (You can do this with "DVD Decryptor" by setting "File Splitting" to "None") and then load the Big VOB file into a Mpeg editor called "Womble Mpeg2VCR" and save the File and it will save the VOB file as a Mpeg-2 File without any Quality Loss at all and Keeping the Dolby 5.1 audio and the Whole Process only takes a Few Minutes and you can also do editing in Mpeg2VCR without any Quality Loss as Long as you do not touch any of the settings....

    Cheers
