My experience: when the file is AVI it takes 8 hours, but when the file is mpeg the time is considerably less, about half at least.

Depends on your memory and cpu , what are your specs ?

you could try dvd santa at http://dvdsanta.com the trial is limit free and only leaves a small watermark in the corner , in my opinion this is probably the best (but burn using nero)

nero takes a very long time and the quality is not the best either

If you're looking for encoding speed the best option is AviSynth and CCE. Using this combination my average encoding time amounts to about 125% of the video's length (ie a 2 hr movie takes an average of 2 1/2 hrs to encode) Unfortunately this combination also has by far the steepest learning curve. The MainConcept encoder is also supposed to be pretty fast, and it should be much easier to learn. Either one of these options means you'll also need to author with a separate program, adding another 20 min or more, depending on how complex the menus are.
