I'm unable to copy from my Panasonic PV-V402 VCR to my JVC GR-DVL805 MiniDV. I'm using the wire provided, but instead, I'm connected through the a/v output slot on the VCR to the av slot on the miniDV. I then followed the manual's instructions for recording from another source, but I'm not getting the resulted as specified in the manual nor do I see anything on my cam. Is there a step I'm possibly missing? NOTE: My VCR doesn't have an s-video slot.

    Thanks in advance :)

Are you sure that your camcorder is not nEUtered (i.e. you can not use your camcorder as a VCR)? This is likely the case if you bought it in Europe. The reason behind it is that in Europe import taxes on VCR's are higher than for camcorders and camcorder manufacturers circumvent these higher taxes by disabling the possibility to record from external sources.

Hi , I am also trying to copy from my VHS video recorder to my pc , via my Mini DV.
I know the Mini DV accepts thruput, as Ive just spent weeks copying from an old Camcorder, via the Mini DV, to my pc. (with the eternal thanks to those on here who helped me).

I have tried plugging the 3 phono type cables into the video , in all combinations , and also tried plugging them into the TV .
When plugged into the VHS , I can actually get the sound from the VHS to come out on the Mini DV camera , so its working to a point, but I cant get any picture. ( I assume that if the picture isnt on the mini dv camera , it wont be on my pc ?)
If I buy an s-video cable will that help ? (as both vhs and mini dv have s-video ports).
    VHS recorder = Sharp VC-MH75
    Mini DV = Sony DCR-TRV75

There may be others trying this , so I hope others can help me, so we can share the knowledge .
    Thanks in advance.

Can you tell me how to get my Hi8 video to my MiniDv or direct to my PC?

You can start by reading the thread when I started...

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/178928

The easy to understand basics are , if its an analogue camera (ie old !) then you have to convert the pictures to digital for your pc to understand them. You can do this either thru a device , which you can plug into the pc, or a card, which you insert into the pc.
The other option is that you can connect your old camera to your pc via a new Digital Camcorder. However (and its a biggie) the new camcorder has to allow 'input', which many dont.
Because I was doing this as a one-off , and loathe to spend too much on a capture card etc, Ive managed to borrow a friends Mini dv, which does allow throughput (as mine doesnt).
However, Ive now realised that Ive not kept all the 8mm tapes Ive copied to VHS, so I trying to copy from VHS to my pc (via a Mini DV).
Which is where this topic started !.

Did you ask a question, Aminutall?
Transfer from VHS to PC is exactly the same as from Hi8 to PC...

Yes I have a problem trying to copy from my VHS recorder to my Mini Dv. (and then ultimtaely to my pc).
Please see my post on this thread dated - 6. October 2005 @ 15:40.
where I cant seem to get the picture to transfer to my mini dv.

On the back of the video there is only one set of composite ports, and two scart sockets. There is also a s-video socket.
Does s-video just transfer picture ,or sound as well ?.

It is just a matter of getting the right cables with one side a connector that fits into your VHS and on the other side a connector that fits in your analog input of your miniDV.
S-Video is only Video, if you use that you will have to take the audio from an audio output from the VCR.

Did a few more tests last night and realised....

There are two composite connections on the back of my VHS, but both are for audio. There is no s-videoc connection (dont know why I thought there was one).

So, on the back of my VHS video , there are two scart connections (one out one in ?) and two composite connectors, which both seem to be audio only.

    I think Im scuppered here.

Yeah, I see they have been doing the same tests on the same night withe the same equipment and with the same feedback. What a coincidence ;-)

I'm not the only one with two lives then...

Did you try the SCART option as suggested to Mr. Benn? It should work...
There really is no difference doing a pass through from a Hi-8 or a VHS...just a matter of getting the right cables and making the right connection.
