Ripped files created by using Smartripper, can these files in the vob format be burnt straight to dvd-r to be played in a stand alone dvd player by using such programs as Nero and Record now max, or do the vob files need to be in another format before burning can be done.

If you Rip the DVD in "Backup Mode" useing SmartRipper and save all of the Files to a folder named "Video_TS" then you can Burn the Folder to DVD-R useing something like nero in DVD-Video Mode..But the Problem is that in "Backup" mode you will get all of the Audio tracks and Subtitle Tracks and special features which means that Very Few Retail DVD"s will fit on a DVD-R because Retail DVD"s can be up to 9gb Large..So to get it to Fit you can use something simple like "DVD-Shrink" or "DVD2One" which will Take out any Unwanted Audio and Subtitle Tracks and if it still is too big it will Compress the Files to under 4.3gb so it will fit on a DVD-R....Cheers
