    Hello

Over the last 1-2 years I have burned many discs using nero recode / nero express and dvdshrink. In short I am not a newbie, however, since version 6.0.0.6 (when Ahead introduced dual layer support) I have had a major problem with nero.

I have submitted the problem to nero technical support 3 times over the last 6-8 months (can't remember the exact dates). I have e-mailed them around 20-30 times regarding the problem. I was requested to send numerous logs etc. which I did. I have been told that there was a problem and the programmers were looking at it. I have chased them up and received messages 'to be patient' (I'd only been waiting for 2 months with no contact). I have been told that they thought they fixed the problem in the latest release(shame they could not tell me so) - only to find they had not. The last time I spoke to them, the support guy told me that he had lost some e-mails and he had no record of my problem; presumably the programmers working on the problem also had the misfortune to lose all the e-mails relating to my problem too, all 20-30 off them, spread over months, logged against at least 3 different support tickets (I have had to re-report this problem 3 times as they keep losing the details). I really can't beleive my head hasn't exploded.

The support from Nero has been nothing short of a joke. The last time I spoke to them they requested I re-submit the problem again. I requested the call be escallated and asked to deal with someone else or give me my money back as the software doesn't work. They ignored all my requests and insisted that my 6 month old misplaced support call was very important to them. At this point I gave up and have not spoken to their tech support for a several months now.

Now that version 7 is about to come out I thought I would try get a resolution for this problem one last time.

    The problem:

When I create a dvd image using nero recode and subsequently burn it to a dvd-r using nero express the resultant disc does one of the following 1) crashes my stand alone dvd player. 2) Freezes when you select a menu. 3) Goes to the wrong menu on the disc. The problem affects about half the discs I backup. If I use dvdshrink they all work perfectly.

The problem only happens when I create an image with nero recode on my hard disc and burn it to a dvd-r at a later time. I have tried these dodgy discs on three different brand name consumer dvd players and the discs crash on all the players, forcing them to switch to standby or freezing requiring me to switch them off and on at the mains before they will start working again.

'One Million Years BC' is an example of a DVD which causes the above problem. This can easily be found on amazon.

If I change the nero recode destination to the NEC 2510A writer and tick 'burn at once', the disc that is created works fine on the same 3 external dvd players, so I do have a solution, however, this is not how I want to work.

The drive I use is the NEC 2510A and I suspect there is a bug in nero specific to this drive. The drive has the latest manufacturers firmware (v1.18).

This problem only happens with nero version 6.0.0.8 and above. Since I first got the problem I have used nero cleantool to remove aheads software and go back to 6.0.0.6 many times. When I do this I can burn the same problem discs perfectly, any way I like. I have swaped between these version about 5 times now doing various tests. Version 6.0.0.8 and above consistantly fail, 6.0.0.6 works every time.

During the recode in verison 6.0.0.8 and above, the logs state 'Burning Layer 2'... on a dvd-r? Does this happen to other people when they write a DVD-R image to the hard disc with a target type or 'dvd-5' and fit to target selected? I wonder if this message is just wrong or if recode is creating an image with two layers or an image that thinks it's on two layers. The resultant image burns to dvd-r without a problem but it crashes my dvd players. This would go a long way to explaining why the resultant discs crash my dvd players as they may be trying to look for a second layer on a single layer disc. I went to great lengths to point this out to nero tech support but they remained convinced that the problem was in nero express (good only knows why).

I have done the following tests today:

    Test setup

    Nero: 6.6.0.16 (registered copy)
    Nero Digital: 3.1.0.16 (registered copy)
    DVD Decrypter: 3.5.4.0
    DVD Shrink: 3.5.0.15
    NEC 2510A firmware 2.18 official

No other dvd burning / ripping software installed. All test burns were done to the exactly the same dvd-rw. In all cases I backup the entire disc.

I decrypted the original 'One Million Years BC' to my hard disc and used the same data files for the following tests.

Attempt 1. Used DVDShrink to create a backup image. Then burnt it to DVD-RW with DVDDecrypter

Attempt 2. Used DVDShrink to create a backup image. Then burnt it to DVD-RW with Nero Express.

Both of the above worked perfectly just like the original disc.

Attempt 3. Used Nero recode to create a backup image (recode entire dvd to dvd (fit to target 'dvd-5')). Then burnt the image to DVD-RW with DVDDecrypter.

Attempt 4. Used Nero recode to create a backup image (recode entire dvd to dvd (fit to target 'dvd-5')). Then burnt the image to DVD-RW with Nero Express.

Attempt 3/4 both gave the following problems:

In my philips dvd player; when I select play main movie it goes to the 'select a scene menu' instead of playing the movie. The player was also very slow to respond as if something had gone wrong and it was relying on it core programming to decide which menu to go to rather than doing what had been requested.

In my samsung dvd player; when I select play the main movie it freezes on the title screen requiriung a reboot of the player. When I select the special features menu, it is displayed but there was no icon indicating which menu item is selected.

On both players, moving through the menus took 4-5 seconds longer than usual. The only explaination I can think of is that the player did not find what it expected on the disc when a menu item was selected and seemed to rely on it's own core programming to decide what menu to go to / action to take when dealing with these rougue discs.

Attempt 5. Used Nero recode to recode the entire dvd to dvd having selected the NEC 2510A as the target device and ticking 'burn at once' (so no image is created this way and the backup is written by nero recode directly to dvd-rw).

Attempt 5 worked perfectly just like the original disc.

Conclusion: As I have thought all along, the problem seems to be in nero recode and only manifests itself when Nero recode is used to create an image which can be burned later. The problem is not in Nero express as the Nero technical support people thought after 4 months hard work.

I would really appreciate some help on this from the experts out there. As things stand, unless I test every disc I back up, I can not trust anything nero backs up. It's just a steaming pile or 0's and 1's.

I am going re-submit this problem to nero support and I will keep you all informed.

If there is anyone out there with a NEC 2510A drive with firmware V1.18. Would you please try to reproduce this bug it's driving me crazy.

If anyone has had a similar problem, please, please post some details as I am turning grey fast trying to deal with the clowns at Ahead.

Thanks for the help and sorry for the long post.

    Regards

    Pete.

    hi..

edited this bit as i realised that you must have mispelt 2.18 as 1.18 so your firmware must be 2.18 thus would be up to date..have you any other media other than that rewritable?....

..can't see anything else wrong in the logs (even though the fromatting of the logs are all messed up i still can't see much wrong yet)

Hi I am using the official firmware from NECs site. I don't want to use hacked firmwares as Ahead may flag this as an issue / say that it is not support / tested. This is where I got the firmware:

    http://www.de.nec.de/softwareoverview2.php/id/557

Is there a more recent official firmware?

I used the same re-writable to show that it wasn't the disc that causes the problem. I have done loads of tests all with the same results using datawrite grey dvd-r (prodisc & fuji dye), some tesco dvd-r with a cmc dye I think, also titanium and reitek. They all give the same results as I reported on the dvd-rw.

Do you know if it's normal for nero recode to state that it is 'burning layer 2' when it is used to create an image for a dvd-5 disc? This seems so wrong to me.

Sorry about logs, don't know why they are like that.

    Cheers

    Pete

i don't like datawrite discs of any variety, i personally think they're subpar quality regardless of the dye used.

i'm no Fuji expert so i did a quick search on the -R variety - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/229520

Prodisc, i believe they're not too good, Tesco (with CMC Mag) - OMG, CMC Mag discs are the most appalling utter rubbish media money can buy.

The only once sounding any good in your list are Ritek. again i'm no Ritek expert (in fact have just bought some G05 printables as some of my buddies around here like them a lot so i though i'd try them).

I don't use Recode but just attack the logfiles. Before you ask yourself what do i know (lol), how about you try and do a simulation burn in Nero's Burning Rom with one of those Riteks and provide that section of log, i use Burning Rom like no other & am also i'm much better at decoding Rom logs.... maybe the log will show something we've overlooked..

    Hi creaky

From what I know I would bet a lot that the problem is in nero recode and has nothing to do with the writing process or the media I am using but I don't know how these things work under the surface.

Here's a simulation log from nero rom. Store cupboard empty so had to use a Tesco disc, sorry. Anyway here's the log, hope it's what you wanted. Hope you spot something.

    Cheers

    Pete

can't see anything wrong in there other than the crap media and the burn speed is more than i or most ppl would use..

    - (sharp intake of breath similar to a mechanic) - foul quality!

    - i only do 4x myself
