    Hello,

I got this error msg while burning a DVD-R with nero.
The DVD-R is a TDK 16X. Perhaps the disk is the problem since my recorder (<_NEC DVD_RW ND-2510A) can only burn up to 4X (I think).
Nevertheless, even If I tell to Nero to buen at 1X speed, I got the same error :

    Hi nicolasr
1st thing edit out the serial # in the log - it begins w/ 1A. Don't need someone else using it.

Did the NEC come with the pc or did you buy it separately? if it came with the pc who is the manufacturer? Trying to check and see of the firmware is up to date. That's usually what the illegal disc error in the log means - the firmware doesn't support the media you are using.

    WinAspi: File 'Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=?.?.?.?,
Check your aspi in Toolkit. In smartstart go to toolkit>info tool>aspi tab. See if anything shows corrupted. If it does post that back.
If it says aspi not installed - that's ok.

Try using other media - like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell.

    Thanks for the reply

The NEC came with the PC (Packard Bell iMedia 5042)
How can I check the firmware (sorry, I have never updated any firmware) ?

EDIT: found a firmware update: http://www.de.nec.de/software/2484_FW_ND-2510A_win219-20A.zip
The update concerns the DVD 16X ==> seems the good one, but says it is NOT for oem !! => not for me. What can I do ? any idea ?

    Thanks again

    Not a problem
For the firmware update you'll need to check Packard Bells site to see if there is one. There may not be - pc manufacturers aren't the best at keeping the drives firmware updated for newer media.

Switch the media to the ones listed above. Try 8x media too if you can find it - will hopefully be more supported with this drives firmware.

    Hello,

if I good understand, if Packard Bell doesn't supply an update, I cannot update the firmware ! (I have not found an update at Pack. Bell :-( )

The only solution is to buy not-16X media ?

That's about right - you can try the one from NEC's page. usually if it's not the right one you'll get a message saying 'target device not found' - no harm.
Or you can try the modified 2.19 firmware here - link.
I recommend 8x media when a drive hasn't had an update in awhile cause usually the 8x media is more supported.

I have found a solution that works. For those who are interested, follow the instructions here: http://forum.hardware.fr/hfr/Hardware/CD-DVD/topic-officiel-graveur-sujet_627952_51.htm#t5427841 (summary here: http://vvn07.keo.in/blog/index.php?2007/03/24/1013-mise-a-jour-firmware-graveur-dvd-nec-nd-2510a ) [in French]

i.e in English: Follow these steps:
    1) Download binflah (WIN32 GUI) from http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/
    2) Download the latest official NEC driver (for instance here: http://www.touslesdrivers.com/index.php?v_page=23&v_code=14763 )
    3) In Windows Failsafe mode, launch binflash, select 'Flash' and choose the file "ND-2510A (GEN) K251GN90.exe" from the NEC-drivers
    4) That's it ! It works !

Thanks for your help: you helped me to search and finally find the previous solution.

    Thanks for posting that!

Hopefully the firmware update will do the trick.
