    hi

having some issue with burning cd's as well as dvd's. i was getting the occasional coaster before, but now all attempts to burn CD or DVD turn out this way. i am down to burner goosed, although it still plays CD'S & DVD's without issue, or a conflict with Vista SP1 RTM as my options, unless anyone can think of anything that i may be overlooking.

mp3, flac, iso, vob, there is basically an issue with whatever file i try to burn to disc

    I have flashed burner firmware
    Updated Burner Drivers
    Used 3 diffferent brands of cd's & dvd's (Sony, Kodak & Maxell)
uninstalled & reinstalled Nero 7. Cleaned with nero cleaning tool, then installed Nero 8, with the same result.
    Uninstalled all recently installed Applications
    DMA is on

My OS is Vista Home Premium x64
My Burner is a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-112D, and its only 7 months old

Here's a couple of things to try.

    - Go back to an earlier restore point and see if it works correctly. If so, a driver or some-such likely was recently installed causing a problem.

    - Have you tried burning with any other software other than Nero?

    - Have you tried uninstalling Nero, running the Nero 8 Clean Tool and then reinstalling Nero?

    - Install your burner in another system to verify whether it is working properly.

Drives can be hosed with respect to writing and yet be able to read correctly.

    Thanks for the reply Laddyboy!

i have uninstalled all the programs that i installed over the last couple of months, & cleaned all traces (well, all the traces i can find anyway)

my comp is in use for now, so it will be tomorrow before i can do a system restore.

tried the uninstall Nero 8 > Nero 8 clean tool > reinstall Nero 8, no change.

i have just tried to burn a CD ISO with ultraISO and it did not work either.

also, i have just managed to burn 3 DVD's in a row with Nero without any problems whatsoever. i then tried to burn to CD immediately after, but without success. so it now appears to be working to burn to DVD but not to CD! is it now fair to assume that the burner is not the problem? any more thoughts on what might be causing it?

    thanks

I'd still try installing it in another system and see whether there's any problems.

You might try uninstalling Nero 8 and running the clean tool to get rid of anything Nero. Then use ImgBurn for burning disk images and another burning package (there are free ones available) for data, music and see if you have any of the same problems.

i have uninstalled and cleaned nero, then installed and tried to use CD Burner XP, with exactly the same results. i used ultraISO to try and burn ISO to disc, but the results were the same with that also. i will test the burner on my mates system in a couple of days or so.

thanks very much for your input Laddyboy, it has been greatly appreciated.

    Hi Rotary

i have tried it with internet disconnected, anti-virus, disabled, counter-spy disabled, and any processes not required killed. the result is exactly the same.

i noticed the last time i tried to burn a CD that the drop down menu that you select burn speed was only allowing me the options 10x and 4x instead of the usual 48x down to 4x.

i am not able to check the burner in another system as of yet, and i cannot use system restore because that only goes back to last friday due to me having a 3rd party application for this. i then uninstalled said 3rd part application in case it was conflicting with nero, but that left me no option to revert back to. DOH!!!

You mentioned SP1.. that hasn't been released yet, it is still in testing because of some pretty major problems. If you have got hold of it from somewhere dubious (i.e. not M$) then sorry to say you deserve all that goes wrong.

I hope for your sake you haven't done this foolish thing, because SP1 upgrade is non reversible. The people testing it have been promised clean vista installs after the testing period if the faults are not able to be rectified by a full release patch.

good grief! how melodramatic can one be!

who put you in charge? ah! of course! nobody, you are self appointed. if you read the thread title and it wasnt something you could help with why did you take the time to reply. very strange behaviour indeed IMO.

and btw, if there is an issue with it i will just simply reformat my hard drive. i have all my files saved to external hard drives, so it will be no problem whatsoever. you make it sound like there has been a death in the family.

lighten up, it might never happen.

    hmm

all seems abit intermitant, sometimes it will burn then not, it sounds like all things required arnt marrying up as good as can be, and no definate series of events, the order changes, i wonder if its dependant on last software used or accessed, like not releasing parts used re: drive etc or even down to alocation of other hardwares like ram.

i notice your on 64 bit this may be a factor as its new horizons re drivers etc plus vista is known to cause a few dificulties to all things get ironed out...

things also seem to change after the sp1 update to a different stream of good and bad burns...
    ------------

noticed also no winaspi location of the nero rom driver?

    Windows XP 6.0
    AMD64
    Wow64Process
    WinAspi: - ---->LOCATION SHOULD BE HERE<----

    NT-SPTI used
    Nero Version: 8.2.8.0
    Internal Version: 8, 2, 8, 0

this also runs into no location to check DMA or PIO mode, are you running SATA dvd writers? even if not there still no location saying the device and a question mark stating its found a drive and check the driver...

    odd?

also no hard drive shown re size etc?

is this a home built pc? were all mobo drivers installed?

    are the hd's sata?

could be drivers? could be bios not setup properly?

    ---------

do you have nero inCD loaded? or any other packet writing software?

    hmm

yes check the bios, i run 6x hds on sata and in 1 place it needs to be on and in another off re ides etc, yes it was quite an eye opener when i built this pc as i run dual raid too...

from your recent comment an added software may be a problem to, what apps have you installed since the change 6 weeks after new g-card ram?

sonic softs on 64bit are bad news

i did hear turning the ram page file to 4gig to match yours may help? not sure for here though.

also have you tried useing windows to burn a cd? xp has its own burn engine for cds only, not dvds... sort of rings true here, you are ok with dvds even play of dvd/cd is good, but try a burn on cd the software you have re drivers for this and MS burn engines may be conflicting?

    thanks again

sounds like you have built yourself a pretty impressive system there...did you have many issues to overcome building it?

i have uninstalled all programs that were installed in that 6 week period (i think, in fact i am starting to doubt that now lol. i will put that on the checklist again), and i have edited the registry also

i have no sonic software installed

i will check out the ram page file also, i never thought of that

i have not yet tried to burn using the windows app,but i will give it a try. i have tried to burn using cd burner xp with the same results. i also shut down all running programs (such as AV & AS)and processes to check for conflicting programs, and again the results were the same.

i will post and let you know re the situation once i have tried your suggestions.

many thanks for you time and your patience.

i have tried your suggestions Rotary.

there are no issue with regards to the BIOS.
i also attempted to burn a cd using WMP. it completed 9 of 13 tracks. and failed to burn the last 4. i can play the 9 songs that were successfully burnt to CD.

after clicking on the DVD-RW drive in device manager, i get the message device is working properely in device status. below that there is the message Windows did not start a related device driver. To learn more, click the Driver tab and then click Driver Details.

i then clicked on the driver details and this is the screenshot from that:

i noticed that cdrom.sys shows teh green tick beside it, but ElbyDelay.sys does not, and it also states that it is not digitally signed.im wondering how significant this is to my Nero issue?

i uninstalled the device, then rebooted and allowed windows to find the driver. the driver installed but the messages are the same.

    any thoughts?

that name elbydelay delay the burning??? not seen this before...

or maybe uninstalling all other burning apps from the pc. then try...

    Hi Rotary

i have uninstalled all burning software from my PC excluding Nero 8. in fact i have uninstalled all software that was installed after nero, including games, and i am now down to the barebones of Applications lol.

    the issue remains the same.

i can burn DVD's in all forms, Movie, ISO etc.

CD's fail at between 10% and 30%, some of the CD's can then be played up until the point where the burn failed, others are still blank.

i am now on the verge of re-formatting, to see if that will resolve the issue, i am out of ideas. TBH i would prob be as well too, all my files are saved to external hard drive, and i have uninstalled most of the software anyway lol.

thanks for all your help and patience, its greatly appreciated.
