hey everyone, ok im gona buy this CPU soon for my PC: http://www.pacificgeek.com/oc/product.asp?id=55572 Since ive never replaced a CPU before, whats the deal with this thermal paste stuff? are there diffrent ones for diffrent CPUs? and also, if i didnt apply it what would happen? and one more question, is there a special way of applying it onto the CPU surface? or do i just slap it on. thanks =D aaron
Most people don't use thermal paste. It mostly helps out those who would be overclocking their systems. It fills in the microscopic air pockets that occur between the CPU and the CPU heat sink. You apply it by putting a dab on the CPU, rubbing it around and bit and then spread it very thin by scraping a credit card or other plastic card across the surface. The pastes are the same for the different CPU's. If you apply thermal paste to an old CPU you are going to want to make sure you clean all the crap off the surface of the CPU and the bottom of the CPU fan with some rubbing alcohol.
ok ill use thermal pastee, but will a intel CPU come with some in the box? edit - ok, i read that most of them do, but the paste is not very good, someone was talking about "actic 5" or something? whats this? where do i get it? i got lots of q's thanks
if you are not overclocking or just using the stock intel cooler that comes with the cpu then there is no need to get extra paste
ok cool i know i shouldnt really ask this here, but if im using RAM DDR 400MHz PC3200, well...is that the best i can get?

Not really that that's the problem, it'll be your CPU holding you back. Single core Intels were never very fast for games.

yep, and that's what my statement applies to. Games will still not run perfectly with that CPU, as most like Dual cores. COD4 is no exception, it doesn't run great without one.
yea, i cant get a better CPU than that one, even tho im lga 775 but how many fps do you think id get outa that one? im using a sapphire HD 3850 tanks
Not sure to be honest, I think about 30 I suppose. Rich here has the same setup but uses a P4 not a Celeron and I think he gets about 35

There's no point in buying ancient stuff like that, is it only means you still have to get a second rate processor, even if it is dual core. Your best bet would be to get a cheap modern board, some cheap DDR2 and a cheap CPU and GPU, do the whole lot. You don't need to spend mega bucks, you can have a complete gaming system with an $80 graphics card, $70 CPU, $20 memory and a $65 motherboard.
