    So here's the story.

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 with a Phillips dvd+rw dvd8601 which, as I just learned, can only burn to DVD+R format. I was perusing some forums and saw something about crossflashing the burner to turn it into a BenQ device that could burn +/-. I was intrigued, but puzzled...how does altering some code change the writing properties of the device?? I have no idea what crossflashing or flashing a drive is...nor have I ever used a hex editor or done any serious coding. I consider myself quasi computer literate, but I'm not hardcore. With that in mind, could somebody with the patience and knowledge of this topic explain to me some of the concepts here...along with a detailed process of how to complete the cross-flashing process (keeping in mind I've read the original forum and was a little lost)? If you want to be my hero, you could also explain how I can use DVD Shrink and DVD Decryptor for copying.

    Thanks.

Unless you're very computer savvy, I'd forget about crossflashing your drive ... DVD+R/RW is a great format and your Philips should allow you to booktype your discs so they'll play on everything

Go here and follow Pete's guides for Shrink and Decrypter http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/petesguide3.html

I'm assuming that you already have DVD Decrypter since it's been taken down on most sites ..
