K, Does anyone know why on the Batman Begins BD when you watch The Dark Knight IMAX preview it is full screen 16x9 but the BD release shows it to be 2.40:1? It is not a big deal to me as I am sure I would prefer the 2.40:1 as it will be the WHOLE view and nothing cropped/chopped but what is weirding me out is that it looked so damned good at 16x9 on my 60" Bravia! This has been bugging me for months...Thanx for any answers/help.
Good question Oner. I'm just guessing that the answer lies in the actual aspect ratio of IMAX footage which is 1.44:1. In a 16:9 widescreen display, any IMAX footage would be cropped and take up the entire screen - but with increased clarity since the original source is 70 megapixels. I was actually expecting the IMAX footage to be shown uncropped in its entirety with pillarboxing on both sides - like what happens with old films that are originally 4:3.
I forgot about this thread for a little while but my cousin just picked up TDK on BD and it looks to be that the IMAX footage is in full screen (cropped) while the "regular" filmed shots are letterbox.
The armor car scene is by far the BEST imax shots, and imax does blow the letterbox away any day. I also find that more motion blur runs in letterbox. Either way awsome movie.
