I recently got an older laptop, and received it broken. I need some help fixing it. When the power plug is plugged in, the battery charging lite comes on. When the button is pressed, the power light turns off. At the same time, the battery charging light turns off. After five seconds, the power light turns off, and the battery charging light turns back on. During no time does the hard drive spin up, or the fans turn on. After that, i tried using replaceing every part i could with one that i knew worked. I used a working battery, working hard drive, and working AC adapter. Still, it did the same thing. I know that the hard drive is dead, because it rattles when you turn it upside down, [bold]and....because i was able to turn it on ONCE.[/bold] I dont know what i did differently to turn it on, but when it booted up, it came to the desktop, and gave me a "can not read/write to disk" blue screen error. Any ideas as to what it could be?

have you tried replacing the ram.

broken ram stops you computer booting.

if that doesn't work i'm inclined to go with colw's reply

How can the system board be fried if the lights turn on? And yes, I can see all the components on the motherboard. What should I be looking for?

look at the can shaped objects which are capacitors. their tops should be flat not domed.

ok, well, i opened it up, and i know what capacitors look like, but i could not see any. Usually on desktops, they are close to the processor, just outside where you mount the heatsink, but i couldnt seen any capactiors on this one. I'm pretty close to just selling the parts. the one thing that keeps me from doing this is that it actually turned on once!

see if there is a fuse on the motherboard & if have or can borrow a multi-meter to test if good or bad.
