Well I am debating on which os to choose for my girlfriends new lap top.

    Vista Pros
-Long term support in terms of applications

    Vista Cons
    -Compatibility issues with XP Games/Applications
    -Tons of bugs/glitches/etc

    XP Pros
-No doubt all her current games and apps are compatible.

    XP Cons
-How long/many newer apps/games will/be available for XP?

I am really stuck here as to what the better choice will be so I am asking for your thoughts. If you have any questions that would help persuade your opinion one way or the other.

    Thanks!

Vista doesnt have that many bugs as it did a while back, so it is pretty good now. However, if the laptop is old, it may run it very slowly as vista is a ram hog.

    What are the laptops's specs?

I cant speak first hand but from the sounds of it i do agree. Still weary though.

The lap top is going to be brand new. It is a Dell Inspiron 1520.

    Specs:
    Intel Core 2 duo T520
    Intel graphics media Accelerator x3100
2 GB shared dual channel DDR2 Ram

She doesnt typically play any cutting edge games that would require an insane gfx card. The most cutting edge game she plays is Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 which does run fairly smooth on my 2 year old Dell(Intel P4HT,1GB Ram,Intel gfx card), so her notebook should handle it fine.

No, it will be SP1 for Vista, since a Service Pack hasnt come out yet.

As for the specs, the laptop looks great. I just wanted to see them to make sure you had at least 2GB of ram, as vista is laggy with a gig.

Personally i would go with XP Home, XP Pro, or even XP Media Center Edition. With those specs it will run Vista, but it will run XP much better and faster. Almost all of the tech savvy people i know who tried out Vista ended up hating it and switching back to XP in one form or another.
