    To complete the delete, empty the Recycle Bin.

    I see no reason to worry at all though with a 500GB drive which is basically empty at this point.

    I rarely have to defrag my system and I backup movies regularly. I
    then delete. You empty the recycle bin and then your harddrive is
    available for more. It is my understanding that the files are still
    on the harddrive, but when you put something new on they over write
    that area.
    The only thing you need to check-If you have Norton Systemworks, they
    save a copy of them in the Norton Protected Recycle Bin. You must
    delete them from there also.

    when I delete a movie from the hardrive it doesn't even send it to the recycle bin, it's too big and says it permanantly deletes it. I have always been under the understanding that ripping and burning movies does leave a harddrive fragmented so the recomendations I have always seen, and followed is to degrag on a regular basis.

    Or you could even just get another h/d just for movies.
    I use 3 h/d's one for movies and music, one for games and last one for operating system and programs.
    I find this keeps things nice and clean.

    Peace all

    @res2cue and ezd20

    I defrag my 80Gig HDD every week. Every movie that's ripped and encoded takes up space and the drive will become fragmented each time the files are deleted. Besides a clean pc runs better. If running XP, in Disc Defragmenter, look at the analyzed disc info; and defrag it, then compare the final outcome.

    I'm running XP with NTFS so there is really no real need to defrag which I very seldom do.

    Some choice quotes from PC Word:

    As you create, delete, and edit files, they become increasingly fragmented--scattered in pieces all over the hard drive. A defragger reunites these pieces. We used to say that defragging would speed up a system, but with today's larger, faster hard drives, that no longer seems true.

    On a desktop system from the PC World office with a heavily used, never-defragmented hard drive, the lab conducted speed tests using a range of applications before and after defragmenting the drive with each utility. In the end, the Test Center saw no significant performance improvement after defragmenting with any program.

    The PC World Test Center's tests reveal that defraggers don't actually improve performance. And Steve Gibson, president of PC consulting firm Gibson Research Corporation, confirmed our findings.

    I run the program to analyze my hard drive to see if it needs
    defragging. I run the program at least once a week. It has been
    over a year since I had to defrag. It shows the condition of the
    hard drive and says that it does not need defraging at this time.
    At most I see one or two very fine red lines where there is a fragmented file. Don't know why my machine keeps everything in
    such good order, but it does.

    I think it's kind of like a car, it'll be fine missing oil changes for quite awhile, but eventually it will catch up with you. Defrag is jusr preventative maintenace on a computer.

    All I know is that, with Defrag-CCleaner(daily)-SpyBot and Adaware run once a week MY pc works better and faster and that's all that matters to me. Everyone's pcs are different and mine's one of the very first XP machines that came out. So it's old like me.

    What is the human years-pc years equivalent factor? LOL

    There is one thing I do regularly that may keep my machine from
    fragmenting so much. Every time I get off the internet I run
    The Norton Cleanup. It usually dumps between 300 and 400 cookies
    each time. With that not clogging up my machine I think it makes
    quite a difference.

    So why does it say you need to defrag, using Windows Defragmenter , i'm also running XP with NTFS + 90gig. I've included a pic below, as i asked this question a while back on why it was takin so long with DVD FAB+Nero 6 whether it was a firmware update or Defragging would help?

    Any ideas?

    From the picture you posted I agree with what your program says.
    You do need to defrag. All the red you see represented there are
    fragmented files. It will take quite a while to defrag all of that.
    It should definitely improve the way your pc runs.

    Thanks for that,

    But is it possible that after a defrag, you can analyse it again & still tell you the same thing? Im gonna defrag this overnight & try analysing it to see if it will tell me the same thing as i think it done that before!

    @Norm9

    You're on the lower limit for HDD space that it takes to back up a DVD 17GB. Free up some space or get a second HDD. And definitely defrag your system. Do it it every day until all the red is gone.

    @Shardel

    When you say you take 300 cookies off your HDD after each session, they leave a fragment hole or space where they were. Norton doesn't close those holes.

    Thanks for the info. I didn't know that about the holes. Since my
    machine was running really well, didn't think I had a problem.
    Usually have my machine at 50% free hard drive space-keep all
    sensitive data on an external hd.
