Earlier this evening I booted my pc and tried going online. When I launch Firefox it goes thru its normal routine and "dials", "opens port", etc....on the final prompt, it'll say "verifying user name and password". Plop! It says it couldn't verify my user name and password. WTF! First off, when I set up my ISP connection, I never entered a password because no one else uses my pc but me. Even if I did have a password, I would set up the connection so it doesn't ask me everytime I launch Firefox, like it normally does (without a password). Secondly, I don't remember messing around with any settings the previous night before. So, what happened? Initially, I thought to reboot, which I did. However, I got the same result when I tried dialing up again. Then I figured to go ahead and put in a password and see if it takes, I think I was able to change the password, but it didn't help with the access. At this point, I was really getting worried. The thought of getting locked out of internet access without knowing the cause is absurd. I don't know the problem, so how can I fix it! I thought to myself, what else can I do, a system restore. I assigned the day before (Aug 30th) as the restore point and it did its thing. I crossed my fingers and launched Firefox, lo and behold, the SOB worked! It went thru its normal cycle, and when it got to "verifying username and password" it kept going (like it normally does) and lead me to my default browser, Google. Has anyone else experienced something like this? What, if any, solution(s) did you try? And did it work? Could my pc be infected with a virus/malware? (I'm running all anti-virus/spyware/adware proggies I have as I post this.) Yeah, I know I should be checking in the Windose XP support/isp forum, but I'd have to open an account..blah, blah, blah... FYI: I have dial up (yes, I know, but for my purpose it's fine by me).
is there a chance that you could of saved your self all this hassle if you had rung your server to see if they had an outage and were down for the day trying to fix it.
Didn't come to mind, but a good point. However, instead of not being able to verify me as customer, wouldn't it have been better to just receive a busy signal (or no signal, at all)? Or a "Server Down" status prompt?
From what you said happened, in your first post, it wasn't your ISP. It was something wrong on your end, so what you are asking in the quoted post would only confuse you more, since it would not be correct. Your ISP was functioning normally, so why would you get either of those messages?
Sorry GrandpaBW, I was merely entertaining andmerr's question. And yes, I do believe it was a problem on my end, but what exactly happened was my conundrum. Any ideas?
When I had dial-up, that happened to me a couple of times. I never found out why. What I did was to delete the the entire connection in the Network Places, and remade it. That worked. I did not want to do a system restore.
it doesnt always happen that way, as was pretty common with my dial up server. But then i also have that with broadband as well
@GrandpaBW Unfortunately, I do not have the PC savvy to fool around with the connections and such, actually, that maybe one of the reasons for the problem in the first place. @Andmerr You have dial-up AND broadband!? How do you afford it? Nevermind, I don't want to know. :-D Thanks guys!
