Hi, my hdd messed up with error 16. I tried to hotswap but the pc never detected the xbox. Now i need to replace the hard drive. I have a Seagate 10 gig hdd. Ok, do I have to buy one the same as a seagate? or can it be another brand like Western Digital? as long as it's unlocked will another brand still work? Thanks.

As long as its unlocked and you have a mod installed another brand will work fine.

Also check out the following link for drive locking compatibility.

    http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/

I am unsure of how up to date this list is but it can give you an idea of what drives are and are not capable of locking in your xbox.

No you will need to format the new drive and install the MS Dash.

Is your xbox currently modded? If so grab yourself an Auto Installer Disc such as the one TheReturn has linked on his page or the latest SLAYERS Auto Installer (search google for SLAYERS Auto Installer)

Once you've burned this disc, place your new hard drive into the XBOX and insert the DISC into the xbox DVD-ROM and follow the prompts from there on.

You will need to do a Factory Retail Restore if you just want the MS Dash back...

If you want to attempt to recover the saved games and music from your current xbox drive. Simply insert the Auto Installer disc in your XBOX DVD Rom with the current drive thats not working, boot your system and you should see an option to UN-LOCK the drive in the Auto Installers menu.

Once youve unlocked the drive you can put it in your PC and transfer your saved games and music from your E:\ and transfer it via the network back to your new drive on your xbox :)

Your xbox hard drive needs to be un-locked first, in order to do that you need a mod installed.

There are many places that can offer repairs for something like this and at the same time install a modchip for you...

Or you can pick yourself up a new modchip and install it and recover your xbox drive yourself.

You cannot replace the drive with a new drive as your going to need your system modified so you can unlock the old hd and lock the new one...

You will also need it modded so you can install the MS Dashboard on your system. You cannot just pop a new drive in and have the MS Dash apear, you need to have it installed on your system via an Auto Installer Disc or copying files from your current drive to the new one.

Ya you can grab any hard drive, try to get one that is compatible with locking check this list: http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/

Then get yourself an auto installer like AID (www.xbox-hq.com) or Slayers and configure your new drive.

What chip did you end up getting?

I just want to get a normal one, nothing fancy. And i didn't install it, a friend did. he said it was an evox m7. So If i just buy a normal unlocked hdd, what do i do next, just pop in an auto installer and thats it?
