How much you want to spend?
I just bought an Olympus SP 350 for £160 ish, and its very good, 8 mega pixels, which means the image is made up of 8 million pixels ( pixels are the coloured dots that make your photo, more dots = more detail in your photo). It also shoots quicktime video with sound at 640x480 which is good enough for an average tv. Try www.pixmania.com that is where i got mine from, you can compare cameras of the same price range to see what you get for your money.

Go to www.steves-digicams.com for good reviews.Get a camera with 5 mega pixel or larger. This will give you a decent 8x10 to print or crop.A 35mm film camera gives you 75 mega pixels.I started with a 3mp,ok 3x5 but gets fuzzy if enlarged.Have 5mp Olympus and 8mp Sony, both excellent.Think about what type memory card you need. Some are less expensive than others, some offer larger storage capacity.Newest ones are 4G.
