I have been fighting this a while now. I have tried changing the DMA but my Windows XP Home will not allow me to change (or even see the tabs that Windows help says are there for the DMA settings). I have tried different media, Verbatim, Sony, Maxell, Fujifilm, Dynex, Memorex, both CD-R, DVD-R, plus & minus for all. Any help would be appreciated. Well, after much cry, screaming and the nashing of teeth, did get to burn a dvd. I still could not get Windows to change, or even display, the DMA setting. I started from the beginning again as far uninstalling Nero and updating the firmware on the DVD burner, etc. The only thing different is that when I re-updated the burner I did it from another machine and then stuck the unit back into the current system. Also, when I tried to get at the DMA setting, I entered the System Configuration utility to see if there are any check boxes to check or uncheck and ended up having to re-authenicate Windows. I am still not sure which worked and what didn't, but the result is now Iam able to burn things again.
Thanks, Creaky. I installed the drivers for the motherboard and after a few tense minutes (because all the drives attached to the IDE controllers were not showing up) and reboots Windows now acts the way the books say it's supposed to. Much appreciated. tra
