Hello there. I went back and forth on whether to post this here or on the Newbie forum, but this one seemed most appropriate. Please keep in mind, however, that I am somewhat of a newbie with this stuff.

Here's the issue: All of a sudden, my DVD burning software (Sonic MyDVD) indicates the video file that I am trying to burn far exceeds the 4.7 GB capacity of the blank DVD-R. Here is the process I use:

    1) Record a television broadcast onto a DVD-R using my Sony DVD recorder that is hooked up to my television and finalize that DVD-R. At this point, the DVD-R has approximately 3.2 GB of content.
    2) Use VideoReDo to import the four .VOB files onto my PC, save them as DBC.MPEG.1 files, edit out the commercials, and combine the four video files into one file.
    3) Use Sonic MyDVD to create a basic menu, insert a few chapters, and burn back to another blank DVD-R. It is at this point that MyDVD indicates that the total content to be burned is somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 GB--way more than the original 3.2 GB of content, and way more than the 4.7 GB capacity of the DVD-R.

A couple of things to note. First, I used this exact same procedure to back up some VHS tapes with no problem. It was only after I started trying to edit and burn television broadcasts recorded directly onto DVD-R that I ran into this problem. In addition, because it seems highly regarded in these forums, I downloaded a trial version of Nero 7 to see what it would do. I didn't run into the same file size/capacity issue, but received the following error when trying to burn:

    ERROR cause: 3 (invalid_parameter)
source: _get_PGC_PB_TM description: ICellRef refers a cell (VOB_IDN=1, C_IDN=2) which does not exist in VTSTT_VOBS#1.

I also contacted Sonic for assistance. They suggested that the problem arises because the video file I am attempting to burn is not MPEG-2 compliant, and that when the software transcodes the video file to MPEG-2, it requires significantly more space. I'm not sure what to make of this observation, given that (1) VideoReDo purports to output MPEG-2 compliant files, and (2) I used the exact same procedure with success when backing up the VHS tapes.

Any suggestions would be greatly appeciated. Because I will be doing this a lot, I'm willing to purchase additional software if necessary. Thank you in advance for your time and input, and please let me know if any additional information would be helpful.

I can see a Bunch of Things you aren"t doing correctly....

Your Problem is that you are saveing the Files as Mpeg-1 files which are NOT DVD Compliant (Or at least Sonic doesn"t think so) so Sonic Has to re-encode the Video and it is Probably calculating the File size Based on the Max allowable Bitrate....

If you want the File sizes to stay the Same and you don"t want the Files to be Re-encoded and you don"t want to loose a Bunch of Quality and waste a Bunch of Time rendering files then save the VOB files in VideoReDo useing the Default settings which will save the VOB files as DVD Compliant Mpeg-2 files without re-encodeing (VOB files are the same as Mpeg-2 files so that is why there is no re-encodeing going from VOB to Mpeg-2).....

You will know that you are saveing the Files useing the Correct settings because it will only take a couple minutes to Render/Save the edited Files were re-encodeing will take Considerably Longer and Ruin the Quality......

So Just don"t save the Files as Mpeg-1 then your Problems should be Solved....

    Cheers
