I have 2 hard drives hooked up, and they've been workin fine, but all of a sudden when i restarted my computer the secondary hard drive boots up, but the primary isn't recognized and it says disk boot failure please insert system disk. the only prob with that is my buddy built the comp. is the hard drive or motherboard toast?
Check your BIOS settings make sure that disk is listed as the primary boot device, also try just connecting the primary hard drive as master, without the secondary drive connected. If the disk still won't boot, use another computer to download the disk diagnostic for your hard drive (i.e. if it's a maxtor use maxblast from maxtor site, etc.) and run a full disk diagnostic, some diagnostics will try to auto repair file system errors and this MAY damage the data on the drive requiring a reinstall of your OS or simply damaging some files. Hope this helps.
i tried all of the above, but i never tried the diagnostic especially if it'll corrupt the data on the drive. I'm getting a new power supply i think that may be the problem since i have the hdd in the computer i'm on right now
if you boot up on the secondary harddisk and was able to see the primary harddisk in windows, then it is possible that your operating system on your primary harddisk is corrupted and you just have to fix it.
it recognizes the secondary and primary, but only on that when one of them are plugged into the one of the power supply plugs
