    Hi
It seems that each time I back up a dvd I lose around 1gb of hard disk space. Any idea where it goes.

the disk space gods ate it..
    hehe..
are you emptying your trashbin after you delete the files? that will free up some space,
also, i'd highly recommend defragmenting your harddrives after a month or so (since dvd ripping fragments your drive, lots of moving of files and so on..)

I have heard of this happening and not always getting the space back, the solution is to have a specific drive or partition only for dvd ripping and when you're done you just format the partition/drive and you get the space back. A pain but better than losing the space.
