I am having trouble backing up Toy Story 2 and Peter Pan 1 & 2 (animated). I am using DVDXCopy Xpress with Windows ME. I have a Compaq Presario Sr1020NX and it came with a Hp burner preinstalled. I get about 50% of the way through TS 2 and it stops readingit and comes up with an error. With PP it says it burned successfully and when I went to play it there was nothing there. Any suggestions on what the problem is? Thanks in advance.

    What's PP?

What's the error message? And what version of Xpress are you using?

Ahhh, Thanks GrandpaBW!! I keep telling myself I may need glasses :)

    Ginia,

In my past experience with using XCopy products, and getting a successful burn message, then ending up with a coaster. What you can try is:
    1) upgrade to the most current version
    http://www.nycsoftware.com/dvdxcopy/support/
    2) update your aspi layer
    http://forceaspi18.w.interia.pl/
    3) make sure your burner is the master drive
    and
    4) make sure your ide settings are set to DMA

    Ginia,

I remember some other threads that said XCopy products have a hard time with Disney movies, this could be your problem. If those suggestions I stated in my last post don't work, try DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter(both are free).

I'm one of the author's of the horror stories. I've had enough of the Disney animated movies not record that I use other software for them now. I double checked and it was just the certain movies and not all. My X Copy still functions well for other movies. 321 never got all the bugs out of their program. Funny thing is, I've read where there are a lot of people who can't get the 321 programs to work on their systems at all. Below is a 321 checklist, for a 321 software owner, it would be a good idea to copy and keep handy.

    Ginia
Tier 2 tech assistance gave me a lengthy bulletin they had prepared. Seems that a number of popular software programs cause interference problems. Tech Support said the problem could crop up anytime; even after the program functioning well for an extended period.

A word of warning, try turning off programs before going through Add-Remove to remove permanently.

    Here is the bulletin:

The following programs can cause problems while using 321 Studios software:
[bold]1. B's Clip:[/bold] This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start Windows. You will need to uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, then reboot to remove it.
For more information, visit the B's website at http://www.bhacorp.com.
[bold]2. Direct CD or Drag to Disk:[/bold] These are applications from Easy CD Creator from Roxio. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start Windows. To remove them you need to go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. There you can select Easy CD Creator to Change - not Remove. Then you click next until it gives you the option to Modify. Then either Direct CD or Drag to Disk should be selected and changed to "make this option not available". Then click Next. While the program may look like it is installing, it is actually removing those options.
For more information, please visit Roxio's website at http://www.roxio.com/en/support.index.jhtml
[bold]3. GoBack:[/bold] This is backup software that constantly runs in the background (Terminate and Stay Ready) which not only needs to be turned off, but disabled. Unfortunately, this may cause some restore points to vanish, but it will free up a lot of hard drive space.
For more information visit Symantec's web site for GoBack at http://www.symantec.com/goback/index.html
[bold]4. DLA: Also HP-DLA, Veritas DLA, and others[/bold]. DLA stands for Disk Letter Assignment. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start Windows. You will need to uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, then reboot to remove it.
[bold]5. InCD:[/bold] This is packet writing software that comes bundled with Ahead Nero Burning Rom.
For more information go to Nero's website at http://www.nero.com/en/
[bold]6. Interactual Player and PC Friendly Player:[/bold] These programs are DVD software viewers that often come on DVD movie discs, and will try to install themselves everytime you watch a movie on your computer. Please make sure to NOT let these install. Both programs interfere with all 321 Studios software and should be un-installed from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel when found. In some cases, you will need to uninstall and reinstall our software to restore functionality after removing one of these.
For more information about both players, visit http://player.interactual.com/
[bold]7. McAfee Anti-Virus:[/bold] This is anti-virus software that when running, can cause errors. It needs to be disabled by right clicking on the icon in the lower right side of the task bar. The 321 Studios software then needs to be restarted. Whenever you are using our software, McAfee needs to be disabled to ensure unrestricted access to your drive.
For more info go to McAfee's website at http://us.mcafee.com/default.asp
[bold]8. Norton Anti-Virus:[/bold] This is anti-virus software that when running, can cause errors. It needs to be disabled by right clicking on the icon in the lower right side of the task bar and the automatic updates should be disabled. The 321 Studios software then needs to be restarted. Whenever you are using our software, Norton needs to be disabled to ensure unrestricted access to your drive.
    The Norton Website is http://www.symantec.com/
[bold]9. StopZilla:[/bold] StopZilla can hinder required portions of our installer, causing the software to fail. Please completely disable StopZilla, then install our software. Once our software is installed, you may safely enable it again. If you have any difficulty using our software at a later time, you may need to disable StopZilla before going to use our software. Uninstallation is not required.
[bold]10. MyStorageGuard:[/bold] This backup software can hinder certain required files from being copied during the installation. Please disable this program before installing our software, and have it disabled any time you go to use our software. Uninstallation is not required.
[bold]11. Napster 2.0:[/bold] This software includes some basic burning software that can cause burning problems if it is running. You will need to close this program completely before trying to use our software. In some rare cases, you will need to completely uninstall this package to attain full reliability, so if disabling does not solve your issue, please try uninstalling this software, and try again.
[bold]12. Easy CD Creator 4.x:[/bold] Due to the age of this package, it is no longer updated by the authors. There are bugs present in this older system that will cause NUMEROUS problems on your machine, not just with our software. Please Uninstall completely, and consider either the new 6.x version from Roxio (http://www.roxio.com) or Nero 6.x (http://www.nero.com). These packages, installed without the Packet Writing software (DirectCD/Drag to Disk/InCD), all work very well together with our software.
[bold]13. NTI FileCD:[/bold] This program has packet writing software installed with it. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start windows. You will need to uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, then reboot twice to fully remove it.
For more information go to NTI FileCD's Product page at http://www.ntius.com/default.asp?p=cdmaker/filecd_main
[bold]Spyware and Adware[/bold] - some programs can install other software that can be damaging to your Operating System. Please scan for these programs with a Spyware utility. We recommend Ad-aware, available freely at www.lavasoftusa.com
If you perform any of these changes, you may need to uninstall our software, then re-install to fix any damage left. If you find some of these packages, please shut down and reboot twice to ensure that the last pieces of the conflicting software are completely removed.
Every version of windows requires updates. These updates correct a multitude of problems that are found, on many levels.
To be sure your system is completely up to date go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
If you are using Windows XP please visit http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/default.asp
If you are using Windows 2000 please visit http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/default.asp
You will also want to update your Direct X control to insure full functionality of any of our programs. You will want to download, and install Direct X 9 from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/downloads
[bold]Certain programs running in the background can use system resources and cause our software to experience burning issues.[/bold]
To disable your start up group go to start, run, and type in msconfig and hit enter, then click on the startup tab.
    Windows XP(Home & Pro):
If you are running Windows XP you will click the disable all button.
    Windows Me:
If you are running Windows Me disable all items that are not Windows system processes.
    Windows 98:
If you are running Windows 98 disable all items except for Systray, Explorer and Scanreg.
    Windows 2000:

Does the software still record non-animated movies by other studios? If it records the others, it is just the Disney problem. Try another movie on an RW to see.

Try TS or PP on the hard drive. Use DVD Decrypter in ISO read mode, take the ISO file and load in the emulator Daemon and see if you can watch it on your DVD player software on the PC. All those programs are free to. Those ISO files by the way will be accepted by all the transcoding software programs as long as you load them in an emulator. Makes the PC see the file as a disc in a ROM drive. Learn that one and you'll be way ahead on the learning curve.

And after all the checks there are some initial questions. Your computer could come with various options according to the catalog.
What is the CPU and speed?
How large is the hard drive and how much free space?
    How much RAM?
Is it a FAT32 or NTSF system? (Right click the local drive in my computer and open properties, the type is listed as File System)
Do you have an integrated graphics system or a separate graphics card and which card if you have one? (some models had an integrated chipset not capable of good video)
The above will give a lot of needed info to use in analyzing your problem.

I have had problems backing up Disney movies and a few others with the Interactual soft player on the disk using 321 products. I have moved over to using Shrink (rip) and Decrypter (burn) with 100% success. Here is the way.....

    Simple DVD Backup Steps

First create a folder for your HD backup. Try to put it someplace where you won’t forget it (i.e. C:/All DVD Work/ (movie name will appear here).

Next download DVD Decrypter (link below) and under mode select “ISO, Write”. Un-tick the box that says, “verify”. Where it says, “source”, you’ll leave that blank, as DVD Decrypter will find the location of your backed up DVD file automatically. Lastly, where it says “Destination”, select the drive where your burner resides. Feel free to close DVD Decrypter; DVD Shrink will open it when it needs it.

The link for the newest DVD Decrypter -
    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_decrypter.cfm

Download DVD Shrink (link below). Open it and click “Edit”, then click “Preferences” on this page we’re going to select “DVD Target Size” as custom and set the size as 4360MB - we do this to make extremely sure that our disc isn’t too large. Then under the “File I/O” tab un-tick “Enable burning with Nero” then click “OK”.

The link for the newest DVD Shrink -
    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm

Place your original DVD in your DVD-ROM drive and a DVD blank in your burner’s drive. (Many people suggest using Ritek G04, Verbatim or media boasting “Advanced AZO Dye. All other media could very well cause errors, only the very best media should be used for DVD Video backups. Now is definitely not the time to put your cheap stuff in, although there are a lot of people that have success with the cheaper media including myself, however I am currently using Ritek Ridata. )

Now, take just a second and under “Target Device” go to “Select target device” once there, select “ISO Disc Image”. NEXT, IMPORTANT, tick “Launch DVD Decrypter to burn the output image” box. Finally, where it says “Select target image file”, browse till you find your created folder for your backup and click “Save”. That’s it! Click “OK” and DVD Shrink burns that ISO image to your HD. It then opens DVD Decrypter and has it burn the ISO image to your waiting blank DVD.

P.S. Before you rip with Shrink, you have the option of selecting entire disk or selecting re-author. Most of the time before I rip with Shrink, I select re-author and then double-click on main movie. This moves over only the main movie to the left to be ripped. I don't even bother with the menus, as you can still select chapters with your player.

Don’t use your PC for anything at all while it’s working. -

    Good Luck

Special thanks go out to Scuba Pete for this article.

Or, if you want to pay for superior quality, buy a retail program such as DVDCopy2 or the Nero Recode2... or Pinnacle or... The options are endless. Recode2 works great on everything I've used it for and handles compression problems better than Shrink. Meaning less problems on long movies like the Disneys. DVDCopy2 gives one of the richest quality videos around. Some people complain of problems which I have never had.

    [bold]Your options are long.[/bold]
I hope your problems with the X Copy can be solved, but in some cases, they can't be.

Don't forget Pinnacle InstantCopy 8 which rivals anything out there(you started to say it brobear) and it only costs 25 to 30 dollars. A steal at that price and extremely easy to use and like recode and dvdcopy 2 retains a working menu...afterthought, I have used ALL of these apps on Disney with 100% success.

Thank you guys for all your info. I will start at the top. I have XCopy 3.2.1. I got it direct from 321 studios on the last day to sell. So far it is only been Toy Story and Peter Pan that have not copied. Everything else I hot not had any problem with. I have copied several movies both Disney and other movie studios that work perfect. I will print this thread and try everything on it. If any of you have even more suggestions please pm me if mine is working. I hope these work. Thanks again

With the 321 you will probably not get any more relief. I just live with the fact that there are some movies it will just not work with. That sort of knocked it off my favored list. I don't know about the InstantCopy as I don't own it. However, I used Recode2 and DVDCopy2 to record the movies that X Copy would not.
