Got this laptop a few weeks agoMSI GX620. Vista is being ridiculous. IE crashes all the time, even firefox has been acting up for me. But what really prompted me to look into linux again was that I was cleaning up some files(deleting)them and vista just wasn't going to allow that It kept telling me the files were in use when they weren't and it also kept telling me I needed administrator rights when I was logged in as the admin, so naturally my head exploded, anyway enough about that. My two choices right now are Ubuntu 8.10 Sabayon 4 Any other suggestions would be appreciated
sab4 impressed me last week.. apart from a few of the usual gentoo niggles. best thing to do is try a few different live disks and see what works out of the box with your hardware.
Try Ubuntu first because the install disc is also a live version of the OS so you can try it before you install it to see if it will be compatible with your hardware.
zulo1 and varnull are right google live linux distros and try them on sd cards or dvds and see which one suits you hardware and needs best before ditching vista if your not a linux buff you might obtain a a copy of xp and dual boot linux untill you are confident with your linux skills.
Well in a few days i'll finally be able to dump this crappy mobile broadband and have a proper broadband so i'll be replacing XP off this old laptop (that i use for a few hours everyday) with either TinyMe or Puppy Linux. It'll be good to get back on good old ethernet and/or 'proper' wireless ie wireless from my own router.
ubuntu makes it easier to install dual boot so that you can go back and forth if any problem arise. yup you should hit d books at least a lil before making the switch i personally use the backtrack distro for im into the pentesting business. I'm very happy with it. I have a Vista black/Backtrack 4b dualboot backtrack was built out of Slackware linux so you may wanna look at that first remember that google is your friend explore before switching.
