EXCUSE ALL CAPS, DISABILITY ISSUE, NOT SHOUTING. HI, ALL THIS DIVX STUFF IS VERY NEW TO ME, AND THE LEARNING CURVE IS QUITE STEEP! MY QUESTION IS THIS: I DOWNLOADED THE LATEST VERSION OF DIVX 6.1 PLAYER, MOSTLY BECAUSE IT HAS A BUILT IN BURNER, AND I'M TRYING VARIOUS DIVX SOFTWARE BEFORE SHELLING OUT SCARCE MONEY ON A FINAL CHOICE. THE PLAYER IS GREAT, IT WORKS ANYWAY, BUT NO MATTER HOW I TRY I CANNOT ACCESS THE BURNER FEATURE AND I CANNOT FIND ANY INFO ON HOW TO DO THIS. DO I NEED TO ACTUALLY PURCHASE SOMETHING TO ACTIVATE THE BURNER? IF SO, WHY NOT SAY SO,MOST LIMITED SOFTWARE DECLARES IT'S RESTRICTIONS AT LEAST. ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED, PROVIDED IT'S IN "KISS" FORMAT, "KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID" !! REGARDS, PATRICK
Hi Patrick, I use XviD codec to encode - it is top-quality, and open-source (free). http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/xvid.cfm Nobody really needs a 'DivX Player' as long as Windows comes with Windows Media Player, right? And 99/100 people use Nero to burn. My goodness, they are going to great lengths to try to sell DivX these days... LoL ;^) It started as just a codec. L8R
EXCUSE ALL CAPS FOR PERSONAL REASONS, NOT SHOUTING! HI The_OGS, ARE YOU RELATED TO R2D2 OR K-9 BY ANY CHANCE? '8¬). THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELPFUL RESPONSE. AS I SAID, I'M A NEWBEE, (FAIRLY WRINKLY NEWBEE I ADMIT) AND I FULLY AGREE WITH USING FREE, OR EXISTING STUFF, RATHER THAN BUYING SOMETHING JUST BECAUSE OF A NAME. I RATHER LIKE WMA 10, IT IS VERY FUNCTIONAL OVERALL, AND I DO USE NERO 7 ULTRA (A LEGIT COPY, A NICE GIFT) AND I FIND NERO PRETTY INTUITIVE AND EASY TO FOLLOW ALSO, I HAVE SO FAR NEVER NEEDED TO READ A HELP FILE TO ACHIEVE A TASK USING NERO. I WISH I COULD SAY THE SAME ABOUT DIVX ON THE WHOLE!! THE ONLY REASON I DOWNLOADED THE DIVX 6.1 PLAYER WAS IT TOO WAS A FREEBIE, AND I THOUGHT HAVING THE INBUILT BURNER WOULD CUT OUT THE NEED TO CHANGE TO ANOTHER PACKAGE JUST TO BURN A HARD COPY. AS MY POST INDICATED, IT DOESN'T WORK "OUT OF THE BOX" AS IT WERE, AT LEAST NOT FOR ME. I SUSPECT IT'S A BIT OF A MARKETING PLOY TO ENCOURAGE PURCHASE OF THEIR CREATE 6 BUNDLE!! I HAVE DOWNLOADED A COPY OF XVID CODEC, BUT I'M AFRAID I FAILED MISERABLY TO ENCODE A DVD ON MY FIRST ATTEMPT, IS THERE A GUIDE AVALIABLE YET THAT I CAN READ AND FOLLOW? I AM A QUICK LEARNER, AND CAN USUALLY FIND MY WAY AROUND THINGS WITH EASE, BUT EVEN THE INTERFACE FOR XVID WAS DAUNTING FOR ME. INCIDENTALLY, CONGRATULATIONS AND MUCH THANKS FOR A REALLY GREAT FORUM, IT'S VERY WELL RUN AND ALTHOUGH I ADMIRE AND RESPECT YOUNGER PEOPLE AND THEIR WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE, THIS FORUM APPEARS TO HAVE A "MATURE" MEMBERSHIP, WITH LITTLE, IF ANY OF THE USUAL "KIDDIE-SPEAK" AND BAD LANGUAGE THAT PASSES FOR THE NORM ON SO MANY FORUMS, WELL DONE TO AFTERDAWN AND THE MODS. REGARDS, PATRICK IN IRELAND INCIDENTALLY
Patrick, try encoding XviD using GordianKnot http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/gordian_knot.cfm The actual XviD encoding settings do not require GKnot and are set once (standard 'baseline' 2-pass rip settings, everything max quality). GKnot will then just use the settings, don't need to re-adjust. It is easy however to review codec encoding settings from within GKnot if req'd :^) Some think GKnot is 'difficult' but it is much better than the oldtimer's way, trying to encode manually! There is also AutoGKnot which is very streamlined; it is easier but still powerful http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/autogk.cfm There are guides here & there; doom9.org is an important resource. Good luck, Regards
