A DivX certified player will play DivX in an avi/divx container as long as it is encoded to the profile that the player is certified to. Most will also handle XviD video and some features beyond the profile, like qpel or gmc, higher bitrates, etc. Some can also handle the ogm container as well as mp4 (typically Nero Digital certified players).

Such players also tend to handle raw mpg's.

MPEG-4 is MPEG-4, so all should support XviD or any other MPEG-4 compliant codec. The constraint comes from the avi/divx container which uses different fourCC's for XviD, DivX, libavcodec, etc. For instance there were some Sony players that wouldn't playback XviD unless you first changed the fourCC from XVID to say DX50. This is not an issue with mp4, since there are no fourCC's.

Less technically: burn a data CD-R with an AVI movie and put it in your DVD player (as a test, use a short AVI and a CD-RW). It should work (and the result much better that AVI --->DVD). No 'chapters' and similar stuff, though....
