has anyone noticed that when you have both ffdshow and the newest divx codec for windows that if you play a divx movie and close down windows media player without stopping the movie that you recieve an error message that the main file of ffdshow caused an error. whereas if you stop the movie before closing windows media player, then you dont recieve this error. Im not sure if this s a stupid question, but i just formated my computer and have no idea if this is normal, or if i installed something wrong, how do i avoid this error? thanks in advacne

Your DivX codec will encode but the ffdshow, if installed, is handling playback decoding.
Use the GSpot Codec Information Appliance to learn all sorts of things about your AVIs, and also how your system plays them.
Koepi has written a small utility that will cleanup empty codec lines in your registry, if any weird codec problems are spooking your system:

I used it and it fixed some empty ones I had, it claimed I had 12 or something. No problem: works good, I can recommend it.
Neatness-freaks will first stop the movie, then close video file, THEN close WMP! So yes, you could say your error is 'normal' but nothing to be concerned about.
