Well, all the divx movies I have end in .avi. AVI stands for audio/video interleave. As far as I understand things, avi is a broader format which can include many different codecs/formats. I don't mean to pretend to be an expert on this; these are just my observations.

Yeah, if your extension is .divx -- like the DivX4 codec loved to rename it, it is still an AVI, just with different extension. So simply rename it back to .avi and nothing changes.

Divx is avi. Most divx starts out as Mpeg-2 (DVD. I assume you want to encode it back into mpeg-2 format. Is that what you are asking?

Viruszero: DivX == AVI. And no piracy. Next time and you get banned.

hmm... I have a .divx file and I can't open it in WMP, although I can open it in the Playa. I tried to rename it, but it really doesn't wanna open, even when I use vdub it says it's not supported -_- the playa is the only thing which works with it and I don't want that ><

I have downloaded several movies .....(dvd/rip/divx). However, I would like to convert these so that I can back them up onto a cd-r and view them through my stand alone dvd player. I am no pro at all and I don't quit understand all of this yet. Basically these files are in divx, and I want convert them to a video cd format. How? Please, any help would be greatly apprecitated.

arnmcmm: Doesn't relate to this topic at all. But the format you're aiming at is called VCD and our article pages have guides for converting AVIs (DivXs, etc) to VCD.
