How does the new DivX 6.8.2 stand against the latest Xvid codec for encoding video? Which would give better quality vs compression?

I would say the new divx would be better as it provides for hd quality however you will need to either use your pc for playback on a tv with an hdmi or component/dvi connection to reap the benefits or a newer hd divx compatible dvd player. I have two philips dvd upconvert players that play divx files but they won't play divx hd. I have found that high quality xvid transfers look just as good on my player by high quality I mean transfers not designed to fit on one cdr 700mb but those made at 1-2gb look great and upconvert nicely, 2 pass conversions take longer but deliver higher quality. Here is a link to some comparisons http://frozenpixels.wordpress.com/quality-divx-vs-xvid/

I've used both and find that they are almost the same. Though on my Divx player there is an occasional patch of green when playing Xvid files which may be due to inconsistencies in the code. Divx is better for HD (and for Divx players) so I tend to use Divx Pro more than Xvid.
