Divx/Xvid movie on CD + subs on Hard Disk - can this work?

I have a number of movies burnt on CD, for which I have the subtitle files on hard disk, in a separate folder.
As both movie and sub files have to be in the same directory, my movie players don't show the subs. Is there a way which I can play these movies from CD without having to copy the movies onto HD, next to the sub files?
