Legend of computers = 1 upstairs 2nd Cpu = downstairs We have 2 computers 1 upstairs and 1 downstairs. I have a d-link wireless router pci card installed on 1 and a regular cable modem in 2. The problem is it says local area network unplugged but its plugged in to the router. # 2 is disconnecting every 5 min and it stays offline for 1 minute and then back up again goes off comes back on. Before we got router it had a direct connection from the cable modem to cpu (2) and it never went offline. How do I get the connection to stay on permantly while using the wireless router?
well this is not hard to do but explaining it may be difficult. Are you running a dynamic connection to the internet or do you have a static IP address? See what happens is if you are running a dynamic connection then every time you log on to the internet you are given a new IP address. If you are running a static connection then you should have a primary IP address. Now the computers should be in ports 1 & 2 of the router. Of course I am assuming that you have the router set up properly. The router should point to the external modem. The modem should be in the proper export jack. Now each computer IP should point to the router primary IP. You will know if you are connected by pinging the router. If you get replies from the router and you did not time out then you know you have connection. Now if you are running a dynamic connection you can get around it because the receiving server can not recognize two computers. It will only recognize the router. I've told you this with the confidence that you know how to ping and run ipconfig. With this knowledge you should be able to troubleshoot the rest yourself.
