I replaced a DVD burner with my first Dual Layer burner recently, a Sony DRU-830A. I had never tried to use it's dual layer burning function, but recently bought a spindle of HP Double Layer DVD+R 2.4x's. I use CloneDVD2 (with AnyDVD) and Nero 7 for this stuff. My first two attempts at backing up store bought DVDs were less than succesful. The problem is the menus. The underlines displayed on one, but not what they were underlining, so it was possible to hit and miss until the movie started playing, which it did flawlessly. On the other disc, the menu displayed properly but no amount of button pushing would get the movie to play. Clone DVD was set to DVD+/-R DL in the Title Configuration window and Nero was set to DVD 9. Are there other adjustments that need to be made or do Double Layer DVDs just not work for the purpose of backing up factory DVDs?
Double/dual layer +R discs work just fine backing up factory discs. The trick is to do the back up correctly andburn them as well. I prefer to backupas follows: 1) backup disc to HDD with dvdfabhddecrypter 2) use fixvts 3) use vobblanker 4) use imgburn in build mode to create iso file 4 burning (note imgburn when asked will create best layer break transition point) 5) set dvd+r dl to dvd-rom in booktyping/bittyping feature in imgburn if your burner is supported by imgburn 6) burn with imgburn http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/494836 http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/383878 http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154 http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/422740 all progs mentioned above are freeware Happy burning
Thanks for this. That's four more steps and programs than I'm used to. Is this more complicated procedure required because of the dual layer format? Is there any one program, like CloneDVD2, that will do the job?
DL's don't require that much more work except the set up with imgburn. Imgburn (IMHO) is the best dl set up/burner out there , so my advice is to do the extra steps and skip the one click progs- for best results that is.
You can copy and burn to DL media with AnyDVD and CloneDVD 2. My prefered method is AnyDVD and CloneCD because it keeps the original layer break. Either way will give acceptible results.
if yer gonna use a dl disk, why not a 1:1 copy? saves a hell of alot of bullshyte. dvd decrypter iso-read, then iso write. create an mds file, and browse to it upon iso write.(keeps dl split intact). however, i would advise u to use dvd rb pro(cce mode) perfect dvd5 copies of dvd9. good options to customize your backup too.
If you'll read my original post you'll see that my attempts to copy and burn to DL discs using CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD haven't worked. How do you do it? After reading this today, I tried yet another one with CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD, burned with Nero. The resulting disc had menus that didn't work properly. I started to play the feature and realized that the background music played fine but their was no dialog track when the characters began speaking. I could switch between a couple of foreign language tracks which were there via the DVD player's functions (the Audio menu of the DVD itself was non-functional) but there was no English language track there. In Clone DVD2 v2.9.0.1, I selected the "Clone DVD" (meaning make a 1 to 1 copy of the entire disc) and let it do it's thing. I burned the resulting files with Nero 7. So what's the secret to making it work properly? I've got 3 or 4 DL coasters that tell me there's a secret I don't know.
In the quality box , select DVD9. If you use DVD5 with the "clone" disc option you will most likely be compressing to DVD5 size and thus a DVD9 is not needed. Nero is redundant since CloneDVD has a perfectly good burning engine.
Like I say in my original post, I *DO* have CloneDVD2 set to DVD9 when attempting to create files for a DL disc. I'll try one using CloneDVD's burning engine to see if that works.
I would also suggest you try Verbatim +RDLs (made in Singapore, if possible) and booktype if your burner allows.
