I made a SVCD (2-3 disks) copy of every DVD I owned. I had about 40 DVD movies and I recently sold them all at a garage sale. I now have 40 SVCD versions of those DVDs. My question is this: Do I have to destroy all those SVCDs, or are they fully legal because I owned the DVDs for over 1 year. Thank you,
    Jon

PS - I read all the forum descriptions and this seemed the most suitable forum for my post. Thank you.

Where are you and what you law says?

Here (in Finland) I would say that you sold rights to those movies and now you have illegal copies of them.

You have to ask that? I would not!

Yeah , check the laws in your country, here in Holland it's ok to have a backup, as long as you have the original no matter how beat up it is, should you keep the SVCD's? I dont see why not, if you keep them to yourself and tell no1 about it :p

I sold the dvd's because I got tired of watching them. I now have all the SVCD backups I made (in case the DVDs were ever damaged by my kids).
    I live in USA.

Contact me if you can suggest at alternatives to just throwing away the SVCDS

Next time, sell the SVCDs instead of the DVD's ;)

I dont see the problem in keeping them, its not like theyre gonna raid ur house right... just stash em in a nice place or whatever, if ur so afraid ur gonna get caught... just break them, throw them away, give em to ppl who dont mind having illegal disks or wutever...

I live in the US and I am fairly certain that once you sell the original copy of a DVD or CD you no longer own the rights to possess the SVCD. If it was me, I'd keep the SVCDs. When was the last time that you heard about someone getting arrested for having copied dvds? Probably months ago. Also, the individuals that have been arrested/fined for doing so are because they illegally downloaded the product, whereas you copied your own dvds. Basically unless a Federal Agent is reading this forum, then they have no reason to get a warrent. If you don't want them then give them to a friend or something, it would be a shame to let so many movies go to waste.

I agree. It would be a shame to see so many movies go to waste.
Maybe there is a place to trade SVCDs? Some type of forum similar to AfterDawn.com that someone can recommend?
