I have recently purchased a creative audigy 2 zs card and was looking at monoblock amps for each chanel. My amp guy however turned my ideas on its head by suggesting that for my room (12 feet by 12 feet) a 5.1 system is on overkill. Since i will be in the sweet spot all the time all i need is 4 speakers. don't need a center chanel becoz of the small room size and my front speakers are good enough to produce LFE (my speakers are actually quite good) how correct is he?

He's right but it depends on what you want. Most receivers have a setting where you can regulate the distance of each speakers output based on the area it needs to cover. That way you won't have to turn your system really really low in an attempt not to make yourself def but have it reasonably adjusted to accomodate your situation.
