does emc still run all the time?

I don't want to have to buy this software only to find out that they still have it installing itself so that it has to be running all the time? I haven't used roxio's suites since back during version 5, mainly because the software has to have part of the program running all the time just to be able to work at all, and it interferes with other programs. I don't remember the name of the process that was running, just that if you prevented it from running automatically on startup, the program wouldn't work at all. If you double clicked on the program, emc would give a message that there was a problem and it could correct it; by correcting, emc meant that it would once again fix it so that their process would be running all the time again, and reinstall itself so that it automatically ran on startup. While I really liked the audio part of their program, I use others for video that simply don't work when roxio has installed their tsr software onto my computer. I had voiced my opinion to roxio after version six came out, but it seems that sonic has purchased the emc suite of software, and still no one involved with emc will tell me if their program still requires it to be running all the time. Additionally, I wonder if sonic will be replacing the burn engine in emc with the superior one of recordnow max into emc for version 8.

I have, and use, EMC 7.5, and there is nothing running all the time. I have no idea what you are talking about, unless you installed the packet writing software, which will put an icon in the tray at bootup, unless you disable it.

I don't use any packet writing software, because it is unreliable at best.

I did not have the packet writing part of the program installed. I haven't used emc regularly since version 5 and then rarely. I no longer remember the name of the executable file that was found in the task manager under processes; it has been a few years after all. But whatever it was interfered with other recording programs such as nero, gear, and recordnow max. The problem with emc was that if that executable was not running, and you tried to run emc, it would re enable it to run on startup again. I guess no one here was around when emc 5 originally caused all the problems when it was released (BSD'd W2K which then had to be reinstalled to work again; yeah, roxio eventually supplied a patch, but NONE of the reviews warned of this problem, the box said it was windows 2000 compatible, and obviously neither the company or any magazine that posted the glowing reviews ever actually installed and ran the software. Just pitiful, and showed everyone that periodical articles about products are simply not to be trusted. This included PC magazine, PC world, and maximum pc). I had a friend with version 6 installed but ran into the same problem as with 5. I also wrote to sonic, who now ownes emc, but as usual, they can't be bothered to answer questions to potential customers, all they want to do is sell software and not support it. And they wonder why people pirate software. No support, no tech info available. Just advertise how great the software is, send glowing press releases to the major magazines (that don't review or try the software, just parrot whatever info the software company sends to them, they never bother to actually try out this stuff with other software to see what interferes with what), take your money, and once you open the disk package you have agreed to their 'software license', and then you're screwed out of your cash.
