Does the amount of memory I have affect rip speed? I have 512mb of DDR, considering an upgrade. How do I know how much memory I can install in my machine?

    Zach,

    You worry too much -

Yes, Memory does effect rip speed IF you don't have enough - You are fine -

About the only thing I haven't heard you say you've done is clean your registry - after a few installs you should do it.

Lastly, install an Application accelerator .exe -

    "P"

PS Pretty stupid question, how much memory can you put in YOUR system - I'll tell you what - if you look at my Grand Cherokee and tell me if I should get new tires, I'll tell you about your computer -

    Scuba,

    Take it easy on newbies.

PS The only stupid question is the one that is not asked.

By the way zachzchw, if you want to find out how much memory your system supports find out your motherboard's model number or computer's model number and look up the manual from the manufacturer and it will tell you the maximum amount of memory you can put on your system. You can also go to www.crucial.com and you can easily find out the correct memory for your system as well as the maximum amount.

    Hope this helps.

Pete, what is your problem? God forbid I should ask a question about something Im not sure about. Who would have thought a q&a forum would be a place to do so?? I asked because I thought that there were maximums as to what could or should be placed in a pc. If it disturbs you so much, you dont have to waste your time to respond.Movie_777, thanks for the tip.

Yes, too little memory can cause problems. Check your drive to see if it went into PIO mode (slow)
    Go to
    1. My Computer
    2. Control Panel
    3. System
    4. Hardware
    5. Device Manager
    6. IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
    7. Open the installed IDE channels (Primary and Secondary)
    8. Click on Advanced settings
    9. You will see the transfer mode. If any are PIO you need to un-install the channel (right click and choose uninstall) and re-boot. Windows will reinstall the device and return it to DMA mode.
    10. Be careful when using this procedure because if you have an older hard drive or storage device that does not support DMA you could corrupt your data.

    Zach,

It seems that you had difficulty reading my post. - I answered your questions and provided you with excellent answers for your consideration.

These answers were based on your posts to many other threads so that I had a pretty good idea of the information you had already gleaned from answers you had received from myself and from other members and from discussions of which you were a part.

You have awfully thin skin there little friend. - If you would have re-read your own post it would have been pretty obvious that considering the fact that PC's differ drastically in their makeup, some small amount of information would have been necessary. You, reading your own PC’s specification booklet would have provided you with your answer. Going to your PC's home page would have provided you with an answer. - Looking at your motherboard to see how many slots it had could have provided us with a clue. Providing us with, [bold] at the very least, the manufacture of your PC and the model number,[/bold] would have been good. THAT, at the very least might have been something. -
In humor, when asking you if I needed tires, look at what I provided you with. I had a car - not a motorcycle or truck, I told you the manufacture, a treasure trove of information compared to what you provided us with.

A stupid question, I think - YES, it was - re-read it yourself and see it from a readers point of view -

Zach, you've been here for some time, you’re not a “Newbie” and for the most part you’re pretty intelligent BUT, do you honestly think that with no information, that's Zero, Zilch, Zip, Nothing, Nada that even God himself could have provided you with an answer ? Let me see, an answer for Zach, Huuuuummm, well, I think NOT !! When I jokingly asked you if I needed tires, at least I told you I had a car, not a bicycle, motorcycle, or a truck, I told you I had a car. I could have left it at that, and left you with what, maybe 600 or more different makes and models but I told you what kind of car I had. - A virtual treasure trove of information to work with but, with all the information I provided you with, my question couldn't possibly have been answered.

Let's see what we didn't have from you - Did you have a notebook, unknown. A desktop, unknown. A tower, unknown. Manufacturer, unknown. Model, unknown. Specifications, unknown. The model number of the motherboard, I think NOT! A picture of the motherboard, nope. Re-read your own post Zach, you don’t think it was stupid ? - You really and truly expected an answer ?

You got humor, deal with it -

    and -
    and -

Actually Zach, it seems "the problem" was you who were so EXTREMELY unhappy with my answers and my humor in my response to your post that -

(And yet I wax redundant in my efforts to entice you to read this thread.)

I suggest you re-read this thread closely - should you feel it's just not worth it, I shall take your advise -

In answer to the first question, I have a Pentium III -500MHZ with 256Megs of memory and it seems to be sufficient for DVDSHRINK. Just for the hell of it, I took the PATRIOT over to my brother's house and used DVDSHRINK with a PENTIUM 4 to do the initial OPEN DISC function on his machine and found no difference in speed between my machine and his machine even though I think there would be a big difference if I had done a backup on his machine. If you have enough memory, I think the speed of the processor is a very big factor when compressing the information contained on a Dual-Layer DVD.

Well... I'm going to preface this by saying that I am a newbie and a pretty dumb one, but need some info. So at the risk of having my esteem pounded in by folks who clearly know far more than I do about these matters, here goes:

I recently purchased DVD X Copy Platinum (original version) before they pulled them from the shelves. The issue is I do not have enough free memory on my laptop (IMB Thinkpad A20M, 12G). Should I upgrade my hard drive, or should I purchase an external HD so I can begin making my back-ups?

Again, I have little knowledge here and invite any witty sarcasm you wish to bestow upon me (so long as there is a modicum of useful advice/knowledge accompanying it...)

    In advance, thank you kindly.

Don't u just love some real Bitchy threads :-S

Anyway, as addressed by Pete originally, memory is a factor in any process on the computer. Your memory is more than adequate to rip/compress a disc. What will most like be effecting your ripping speeds will be if your drive has RPC 1 firmware installed enabling 6x faster ripping than a normal locked drive.

Also, remember that DMA should be enabled on the drives to increase speed.

Oh...and as to how much RAM you can have, it is a difficult question to answer considering its hard to know how much RAM is on a module. If you have a single 512MB DDR RAM module, then you will be able to add atleast one more. I currently have 2GB

My Goodness, I thought this thread died a natural death - Ooooohhh well, another day, another bill - What can I say -

Hey there mxbxr How are ya -

Welcome to our little Club, You picked a rare thread, we really don’t get rammy very often - we try to stay up beat and humorous - witty sarcasm this wasn’t, this was an argument that got out of hand. As you very well are aware, everyone has a bad day and my buttons got pushed that day. Again, I apologize to all. This is not what we are about and this is not the way we want to welcome Newbies into our fold.

    As to your question -
I see you have a 12 GB hard drive and you are correct, there’s not enough space for you to move around in and store a DVD or two. As to your query, should upgrade your laptop ? I should think that if you have a 2.0 USB connection you would be well off to consider getting an external hard drive.

Yesterday I won a bid over on Ebay for a Brand New, in the box, 200 GB Western Digital HD for $115.00 (plus shipping). Probably another $40.00 to $50.00 for a case, fan, etc. - A friend of mine will come over and put it together for me in about ½ hour and all we have to do is plug it into the wall and the PC and we’re good to go.

Think about it. You can then take all your software programs and 20 or 30 movies with you to a friend’s house, plug it in to his PC and show him what you can do. When you upgrade your laptop to another one or a full-sized PC and you just have to plug your HD in and you’re good to go. No files to move or risk losing.

And again, feel free to ask questions, that’s what we’re here for,

    Cheers,

    Pete

If memory serves, I believe Zach has grown up recently but as far as I'm concerned, let me make sure my last Newbie is taken care of and I'll ask one of our "Friends" to seal this thing shut -

I don't like the idea that a Newbie came in on a thread like this one -

    Hey there mxbxr,

Did you require anything else or are you OK for now -

As I mantioned, This is one thread that as sure as I'm not leaving you out there with unanswered questions, we're going to request it be closed -

    Hi there-

Thank you very kindly for your advice. I will be going onto eBay today to see what HDs are out there, and will make a purchase.

    Again, thanks very much!
