I currently have an NEC DVD-RW (IDE)
I currently have a SATA HD and my computer has been fine.
I have just installed a Samsung DVD-RW (SATA) in my computer too, and as soon as put a blank DVD-R into the drive the computer becomes unresponsive.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

I have 4 SATA sockets on my motherboard.
My HD is in SATA 1

RAID is disabled (not a real tech guy, i thought RAID was for utilising more than one HD?)

I have got the latest firmware for the drive, the computer is recognising it. It's just as soon as i put a disc in it, it freezes the computer.

hmm real hard to say with this as i think you have sata1 for HD and sata2 say for DVD drive, i reckon it could be the bios needs setting up? not sure, but its where i would look!!!

yes raid is for useing more hd's to make as mirror or stripe or both
