I'm looking to buy a new ipod. I want to get the video and I also wanna install Rockbox and iPodLinux on it. But my question is, Is it cool at first and then it wears off, or is it something that you'll keep using and screwing around with it. I mean I'll use it for videos and music but is the extra stuff worth it. Is it worth me spending 400 bucks to install Rockbox and iPodLinux and keep messing around with it.
I bought my iPod in I think November and I still enjoy tinkering with it just about everyday since I got it. It is some of the better money that I've spent I think. You'll be occupied especially if your interested in making your own skins for Rockbox as that is pretty time consuming while rewarding. I think its a worthy purchase, but it's up to you really. If your going to buy one I recommend spending the extra 100 on the 60 gig iPod as it seems your planning to do.
They are both alternate operating systems for your iPod that allow you to do things that is normally restricted by the iPod firmware. Big perks are continous playback and being able to play pretty much whatever file type you want, and the use of plugins so you can play games and whatnot.
Through the use of emulation and iPod Linux yes. I'm not quite sure how to exactly do that yet though. But yes it is possible. Rockbox has some simpler games embedded in firmware, like Tetris and Snake and those sorts of things.
