Hello! My disc drive (plays DVDs, and can burn and rewrite cds) suddenly stopped working in late December (I had only had it for about three weeks by then)... I know it has nothing to do with the plugs being incorrect inside the computer, because it WAS working (and between the time it was working and ceased to work, no one touched the CPU). I know the drive isn't dead because it still lights up when I put a disc in it. Plus, I'm able to eject the drive from the computer. So, I'm sure the drive and the computer are connected just fine. I was burning a cd, when I was suddenly told that the disc wouldn't work. So, I went to switch discs and try again, but it told me there was no disc in the drive. Ever since, it refuses to realize that I do have a disc in. I put a disc in and the drive does what it should physically, but when I open up drive from my computer to read the disc contents, it always comes up blank. I know it's not my discs, because they all worked on this computer before and work on others. No disc works (music cds, burned cds, games, etc)... Even the disc that has the drive's drivers and such on it doesn't work. Also, no matter how far back I used system restore (even to days I KNOW it was working), it still won't work. I've scanned my computer for spyware, adware, and viruses with various scanners and nothing was ever found. If you have ran a cd head cleaner through it. And have the latest firmware from here ftp://ftp.aopen.com.tw/pub/firmware/combo/com5232aahpro/com5232aahpro_r108.exe Then the drive may have went bad.
I believe I had the same problem recently. The drive was an Iomega DVD burner that was about 3 years old. I inserted a regular DVD disk and tried to burn some BU files and suddenly saw a message flash saying something about "power fail". From there on out the drive would do nothing but open and close. Could be your problem, or it couldn't be, it does sound related though. Don
Hi. I updated the firmware and Nero, yet the same problem still exists. Are there certain Windows drivers that have to directly do with the computer reading or knowing a disc is in the drive? I am thinking that I may need to replace these files, in case one is bad.
sisqoluv I see what your problem is: Your system ASPI files are missing. You need them to burn. Follow this guide: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/aspisetup.cfm I also saw you had INCD installed and this conflicts with nero. Remove it with Nero's own zapper program: http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/InCD_CleanTool.html Sometimes you can just install the system aspi flies, and sometimes it gets more interesting when it doesn't want to take. Try running Nero info tools, and click thru the tabs. One of them checks your ASPI: and one version of ASPI http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/aspi.cfm You will only need one to get it to work, im just putting up as much stuff on aspi as i can find. Follow the AD guide first and try it their way. You may have to get in to the Force Aspi situation, but try the normal route first. Missing or corrupted system aspi will cause your system to not burn, or only burn cds, but not DVDs. Once you get system aspi fixed, and remove INCD, you should be back to happy burning land. It can be done, but you have to close out all programs not needed for burning, and you may still be low on memory even if you manange to kill off most programs. Another 256MB memory stick will bring you up to 512MB, and it will make a difference.

The burns are seperated by something like this Windows XP 5.1 IA32-xxxx-xxxx- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- that was from a Nero 6 log, but 7 looks much like that. Underneath the divider is the operating system, and right below that is the begining of the serial number. When posting a log, just include the last burn log, and edit out your serial numbers by typing xxxx over them. Getting the system aspi installed and working was a good step. If you post a log, we can look thru it. Also, some ppl are having problems with the latest version of nero 6 so if you still have 6.6.0.18 try using it.

if it is 3 weeks old have you not kept the invoice / recipt? i would take it back or ring the manufacturer?
i personal have never had a problem with any part not working because of a windows driver fault, but then every time i update somthing i freshly install windows again. not only does it help with the process of elimination but also keeps my computer running quick and clean! my rule of thumb! 1 - buy new part 2 - install new part 3 - if new part doesnt work check the manufatures site or contact the manufacturer for help (recalls or problems) 4 - still a problem take it back to the shop
sisquoluv, quickly go back to that last post and edit out your serial number. There is a very good reason for doing this. Just use the pencil and paper symbol next to your post and it lest you go back and edit. Type XXXX over the numbers right under Windows_XP_Home . That is your serial number, and believe me, you dont want that up on a public forum.. This is why i asked for this log. We knew you had very little memory, but this part shows us how much is really being used, and how much is available for ripping. 59MB is not enough memory and there isnt much we can do to get past this wall. You can try closing down as many programs as you can, but that probably wont free up enough. That is why 512MB is thought of as the MINIMUM needed for DVD ripping. Im sure CD ripping can get by with less, though i dont know how low you can go on it. You were using a RW disc, so that is ok. But it would give you problems if you were trying to use it on something that requires a finalized CD. First time i saw this, i thought you were burning a DVD, and thats a problem for DVDs also, unless you are making a DATA disc, and thats something else. The firmware is up2date on that drive. http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1983 a couple of things i didnt see in that log was media used, and burn speed. Both are important to know if you are having problems.. [bold]Remember to edit out your serial number in the post.[/bold] ****edit**** Sorry, i just re read and saw this is a CD burner only, so dont look for a DVD burn log. My minds playing tricks on me..
dunwell, it's now a few months old. My mother purchased it as a birthday/Chirstmas gift in late November from Wal-Mart.com. I don't want to send it back if it's something I could maybe fix myself. I rely on my computer for school since I am taking online classes. I do not trust bringing it to any of the local computer shops because they have very bad reputations. I would reinstall Windows, but I have no way to back up my files since I can't back them up to any cd. Sending my computer back would be my last option, since I can not back up my files or not have access to a computer for schoolwork. MaxBurn, sorry about that. I edited the post. I could not find that history log until I updated Nero (it had never existed until that point), so maybe that has something to do with why that information is missing from the log? Does anyone know which drivers are directly invovled in the computer reading a disc? I probably have to replace them. Edit: I was checking my properties for the drive, and it says "File System: Unknown" I doubt that has anything to do with what's wrong, but I'm pretty much out of ideas =D
