Downgrading firmware on WRT54G

Hi everyone, i was wondering if anyone knows how to downgrade firmware on my router, I have not tried a "Hard Reset", as i can't figure out how, i did hold down the "Reset" button until the lights on the front flashed but, my firmware never reset. i am not sure of my orignal firmware version (according to what is on ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/ its 1.42.2 as far as i can tell) i am currently running 2.04.3, but, once i did the "upgrade" the router can no longer access the web, i know it was the firmware because i can access the web via the modem, but, not threw the router. Also, i did download the wrt54g_1.42.2_fw exe file but, when i flashed the router (it acts as if it succeeded) and go to the router page, the firmware is displayed as 2.04.3
