download avi can hear but cant see

hi all i download an avi file now and it just comes up with a blank screen but i can hear the audio???any idea's.it seems every file is like this now.thanks lads

 

Drag the AVI on to GSpot and try to see which codec it needs and if it's installed on the PC.
In the example, the video codec is XviD and it's installed.
You can also try to play the file using the buttons.

If the codec is not present, you can probably download and install it.

 

thanks dude.what i did try lastnight was to convert the file to divx(the v6 one)and then try convert that to dvd.shoukd that work?i havent tried the 2nd part of it but certainly i can watch all content through the divx player that i download.if this doesnt work i will try your plan b sir.thanks a lot

man im lost i downloaded the gspot thing but it doesnt play the file.it says codec H.264/MPEG-4 AVC.tried downloading xvid but now im properly lost.any idea's whati can do.like an artifical lamb to the codec slaughter.helppppppppppp

 

VLC should be able to play the file.
