My dvd or cd drives are not showing up in my computer. This happened yesterday and i'm lost. They are listed in the device manager with an exclamation in front of the dvd and cd roms. Under device status this is what it says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" It is the same for all the drives. I would re-install XP Media center OS, but is kind of hard with out a dvd or cd drive. Hope someone can help. I'm on msn messenger @ egm47@msn.com Thank you
egm47 I would try the following: 1. Rebbot and open the Computer's BIOS and make sure that the Second IDE Channel is Enabled and not "Disabled". 2. Make sure the ribbon cable connected to both drives and Motherboard are plugged in securely. 3. If 1 & 2 are OK then try a new ribbon cable, they do go bad. 4. If all of the above does not work then one of the drives may be defective. You will have to disable (unplug) one of the drives from the ribbon cable, usually the second one from the end, change the jumper to Standalone on the drive still connected. If this does not work unplug the ribbon cable from drive at the end of the cable and plug it into the drive you disconnects first, change the drives jumper to Standalone. 5. If after all this if you still can not get either of the drives working then the computer's Secondary IDE Controller is broken on the motherboard level and you will have to install a PCI IDE controller, if you have a free PCI slot. Remember to keep track/record the Drives jumper settings so you can reset the jumpers back to Master/Slave correctly when finished.
