i got most of info here: http://www.rtenl.ie/index.asp

but whats the story with set top boxes is there a list of boxes out yet that can be used with DTT. will rte supply there own boxes.

    Anyone?

Any MPEG-4 Terrestrial tuner box or TV with tuner built in (MPEG-4 only!) will do. Only four or five channels up at the moment and the commercial arm of it is held back again so it looks like at least end of this year until you'll see any more stations.

UPDATE: Actually you can keep up to date here hxxp://www.dvb.org/about_dvb/dvb_worldwide/ireland/

Obviously replace the hxxp in link with http!

Why are RTE even bothering with this DTT project. These guys are so backward and behind the times. Satellite is the only future (and cable aswell i suppose but thats alot harder to roll out access to everyone). This is a total waste of money. I mean, all the Irish channels are already avaiable on the Astra satellite (the one sly, bbc and itv use). This footprint is very strong over the whole Island, therefore almost no accessability problems for people (you will get the one or two exceptions)....why dont RTE request that Sly un-encryt the channels and make them free to air like bbc and itv already are. There would be little or even no extra cost what so ever to RTE (not quite sure how much it is to lease the space on the satellite transponder to be honest but surely its not alot).
This would save the ordinary person a lot of money....I mean, its gonna be about 150euro for the DTT aerial and set-top box plus whatever an installer would charge. Where as you can pick up a fantastic sat dish and set-top box in lidl or aldi for 65euro. It boggles the mind. And sat dishes are so easy to fit. With the sat option it allows RTE to develop a HD channel which is desperatly needed. RTE as a company lost my viewing during the world cup because bbc and itv had every game in HD for free.
Now I now sat dishes can look ugly and everyone having one on their premises might not look appealing (I think Amsterdam actually has a ban on all dishes in the city centre to protect all the buildings etc) but thats besides the point. My point really is that the DTT project should be dropped and focus solely on the sat capabilities. Its the future as far as I'm concerned. Why are they so backward....

The main problem is the overspill of the satellite signal into the UK.
RTE's programming rights are for Ireland only and as a result the costs are far lower than the equivalent rights for the UK market.
I cant see the English channels being too happy about RTE showing programmes before them and the content providers wont allow it.
The overspill from the uK into Ireland is only a small percentage of the uK market ,4m out of 80m ~ 5% .The other way around its 2000%.
That is the main problem .
Of course RTE could and should have a satellite card available to Irish residents that allows the viewing of the terrestrial channels .
They are launching SaorSat in 2011 which will provide a spotbeam ,tightly focussed on Ireland ,but that will need a seperate type dish pointed at 9e so thats a bit of a lame duck too.

Unfortunitly ireland is backward at doing anything as the dont even conform to standards on the cable either.

Take sean fitzpatrick ex president of anglo irish bank helped himself to the banks money millions of euro, and who is left to pick up the pieces yep the good old paddies, and NAMA another lame duck paddies again left holding the can.

DTT is practically here , i use it at the moment with in conjunction with freesat. At present there are 6 tv and 10 radio stations , TV line up is RTE1,RTE2,TNaG,RTE News, Test Card(will be TV3)and a HD channel test card..This service is to be officially rolled out by the end of October where most likely we will have RTE in full hd...more muxes with extra content are planned for early next year , while RTE has just announced that in areas DTT cant reach there will be a dedicated satellite service Soarsat which is likey to be Kaband @9E using spotbeam for Ireland and costing 1.5 million a year. So things are moving along...have to say the picture quality is great and i would recommend it..

You will need to buy your own boxes which should be HD , if you want to test you can buy cheap usb tuners for around 10 euro which work fine with windows media centre

Can you tell me if you just connected this box up to the existing MMDS system or if it took muck work to get it going?

it didnt take any work. i plugged the box in. put the rte aerial lead into Antenna Connection and scanned the box. all channels came through. it doesnt work from MMDS aerial it works from a uhf/vhf rte aerial.

if you have a powered UHF aerial and your TV has a mpeg 4 decoder built in it, you will get them
