    Ok. I give up.
I downloaded dvd copy suite 5 which told me to download ifoedit, smartripper and dvd decrypter. I have a sony dvd+-RW/+-R external drive and an internal cdrw/dvd drive. All I want to do is make exact copies of my children's DVD's.

Could someone please tell me how to do this in layman's terms? I am gonna go broke before this is accomplished. I used dvd decrypter and thought I followed the guide; but can not play back my "copy". I changed the mode to read; waited until it finished, changed the mode to write and waited until told it finished only to find out that I can not play the copy. DVD copy suite 5 is a joke as it keeps sending me to differnet downloaded programs and I am lost.

    All help appreciated,
    Thanks

Lilchiefy, Ill do my best to guide you through it. First, download dvdshrink. You say you already have dvddecrypter, thats good. Heres the step by step....
    1. put the dvd you want to back up in your drive and open shrink.
    2. click open disc. after shrink runs through its analysis stage (about 2-3minutes), select "backup".
    3. Wait for shrink to rip (copy) your movie to the hard drive.
    4. When shrink is done, open dvddecrypter. Click mode at the top and select "iso write". Select the file shrink made on your hard drive. Select the file, hit the burn icon at the bottom, and enjoy your backup!!

Ps- Ill post another reply with some other helpful hints after this one, dont want to overwhelm you all at once.

D'oh - Another newbie gets ripped off !!
It would seem that DVD Copy Suite 5 is only pointing you towards free software anyway such as IFOedit / DVD Decrypter / Smartripper / DVD Shrink <-- that being the one you should really be downloading , then use this guide below:
    http://www.chrismccann.co.uk/dvd_shrink_3.htm

I normally suggest Nero 6 to burn with but others may shout about RecordNow.

Lil, heres a few more hints and tips to help you out- (all stuff I wish I had known before I started burning, which I later found out through the pros here at afterdawn).

    1. the most important aspect of the burning process is your media. Ritek seems to have the best reviews. Check around on this site for more about this.

    2. playback problems are often due to a disc being written to the edge. Try compressing a little with shrink.

    3. You can check your blanks, source discs, or backups with a great tool (also free) called dvdinfopro.

    4. if you need any help, post on afterdawn- somebody will know how to help you out! One more thing- search for threads with the word "petition" in them and check it out. We need all the signatures we can get to keep our fair use rights!!!!!!!!!

[bold]P.S.[/bold] Do you know firstly that your external writer is set up correctly (ie; using USB 2.0)

    Hi girls and boys,

I saw this on DVD Decrypter's web site:

"I just want to take this opportunity to let you all know about the amount of 'RIP OFF' DVD software out there.

It has come to my attention that the following DVD Compilation packages just provide you with a bunch of FREEWARE tools and some lame guides written by the companies themselves or some decent ones that they have stolen from places like www.doom9.org.
    CopiesAnything
    DVD Copy Decrypter
    DVD Cutter
    DVD Echo
    DVD Maximum Pro
    DVD Squeeze
    DVD Wizard Pro
If you've paid for any of the above, you've been ripped off and should ask for a refund instantly."

Add copy suite 5 to the list.

Using Shrink 3.1.7.6 and DVD Decrypter works pretty well.

Once you have both programs loaded just use DVD Shrink to compress and decrypt your movie.
When you select "backup!", under target device, select "ISO Disc Image" once thats selected a box appears below that says "Launch DVD Decrypter to burn the output stage". Just make sure the box is checked, your blank is in your burner and select OK. Shrink will then take over, encode your movie and then use Decrypter to burn it for you.

Read the guides for Shrink first! Shrink is a bit easier than Ifoedit and once you familiarize yourself with the guides you should enjoy the process.

    A couple more things:

Use high quality, compatible media, if you have a -R burner you need to use -R media. Try Ritek or Verbatim. R/W media burns slowly but can be used over many times, A good choice to consider when learning.

Don't use your computer when it is processing DVDs. Shut off as much background stuff as possible. Make sure your HD is defragged and all the other normal maintenance has been done.

Well thats my two cents worth,

    Cheers,

Thanks for all the advice. ...
fasfrank suggested that I select "ISO disc image" in DVD shrink and that if the box is checked that says "launch DVD Decrypte to burn the output stage" shrink will then take over encode your movie and use Decrypter to burn it for you.

I am with you...but I can not select this box?

If I follow zachzchw suggestions, what file do I select to burn it? I get the folders, 1 is empty and one has a host of files.

    Thanks.. You guys are great~!

Lil, you should have an iso image with the name of your movie. I believe it puts the file in drive c by default. To access it, go to my computer, look in drive c, and it should be there. When you click on the little folder icon in decrypter, where does it take you?

    <crossing fingers and praying>....
I uninstalled all the junk from the past including my dvd decrypter and re-installed dvd decrypter following the link in my thread posted by herbsman and now I was able to select that box that says "launch dvd decrypter to burn the output stage"....
    Hopefully, this works :)

I heard that opening decrypter with shrink can lead to problems, not sure if its true or not. Try just using shrink, then when its done, open decrypter. Also, what kind of media are you using?

    Hi ya lilchief,

My recommendation is to first, create a folder on your HD where you want DVD Shrink to backup your DVD's ISO files too.

    NOW -

Open Decrypter and untick the box under destination that says "verify" - set speed to "Max".

    Go over these settings -

Go into DVD Shrink, click “Edit”, then click “Preferences” under the “File I/O Tab” un-tick “Enable burning with Nero” then click “OK”.

When time comes to select “Backup”, take just a second and under “Target Device” go to “Select target device” once there, select “ISO Disc Image”. [bold]NEXT[/bold] tick “Launch DVD Decrypter to burn the output image” box. Finally, where it says “Select target image file”, browse till you find your created folder for your Backup and place it there, That’s it ! Click “OK” and DVD Shrink backs up to your HD, then starts Decrypter which burns that ISO image to disc.

and BTW, Welcome to little Club,

    Pete
