Well my soundblaster Audigy 2 card is just the standard Audigy 2 6.1 (not platinum etc)

As for the Mpeg2 to dv/avi - the loss is not noticable - Ive been doing this for the last 2 years on a pioneer DVR7000. See I capture footage to the Pioneer DVR's (From VHS/DVD/Laserdisc/Satelite box) then transfer to PC just to make DVD's with menus of rare concert footage etc - not to transfer from the PC to the recorder.

So my primary use is to just get footage off the 5100 to a firewire connection in my pc.

    Dear Chris,
we both have indeed the same problem.
Getting DV out of the PC and getting this stuff into that beasty 5100.

My firewire-camcorder-kladderaddatsch (dictionary!) works under Studio8. Why don´t You test this? No PC with ordinary fw-card in the neighbourhood?

I will definitely test mijacmads suggestion. If working, You should be able to use this too in connection to Studio8 - sorry, this is the only software suitable for that of the software I own. Is this a problem to get Your ready video material in Studio8?
If not working, my kids get a brandnew audigy as a gift to make podracer noise...

    Till soon
    Yours
    Ralf

    And the winner is...
    my kids.

Sorry. The Audigies available here with 1394 are Audigy2 ZS. 1394-function seems to implemented rather more "in specifications" than before - no Cl driver anymore for XP, OHCI-conform is used and not changeable at all. Also the video-device in XP´s device manager I cannot change, it´s always "AVC-conform tape recorder". Yes, I get out a video signal from Studio8 via fw-cards I own to 5100, but 5100 allows no recording because "no camcorder present". SO I keep the need of help from my camcorder in the near future.

majacmad, do You use any different 1394-driver for the Audigy? Do You see any different video-device in the device-manager?

Sorry, m, from 5100 to PC/Studio8 I also can not report any effort. "Best", but with distorted picture, comes a poor signal through Audigy´s slot, all other slots (one pci-card brandless, TI-chips, OHCI- or TI-OHCI- or Sony-OHCI-conform drivers; second PCMCIA-card NEC-based chipset, NEC-OHCI- or OHCI-drivers; third built-in-slot of Toshiba Satellite notebook. OHCI-conform driver): no picture, frustrating.

Chris, at the moment I have no fresh ideas. Nor have I an imagination of any systematic path to follow. Seems, that any efforts till now have been a result of chance.

Perhaps I take a little timeout to relax and think.

If anything nice happens, I will be back.

    Cheerio, Yours
    Ralf

The driver I have for my Audigy 2 6.1 standard is most up2date 5.12.1.38.3
Strange that it's not working for output mine is crystal clear!! But mine's not a ZS just a standard model.

My PC reports AVC Compliant DV Tape recorder/Player #4 on turning the 5100 on through the Soundblasters firewire.

Oh how frustrating about no picture out aswell - I know Chris said he was using a RexRT Pro card but that's vey expensive a chance to take if it doesnt work - was hoping yours would maybe work :(

Maybe will have to try on a cheaper Canopus card to see if works ...

    Hello,
once again I have to write my reply third time because the forum´s software might have a bug in recognizing a login.

mijacmad - via audigy2, are You able to [bold]record[/bold] to 5100? or do You see only pictures but "no camcorder present" as I do?

My point is that firewire gear might be secondary.

5100 does only record if any camcorder answers to the 5100 control signals. So we need any software which emulates a camcorders answers parallel to the working cutting software.

mijacmad: what software from CL do You have running in the background? I have installed only necessary drivers because CL software never was satifying to me (try APSLive for a SBLive and You know what I mean).

Chris, You are a video professional. Any idea about a small piece of software which can emulate any camcorder´s reactions?
Any idea, how to change the AVC-dingens-device in XP´s device manager to a more camcorder-like thing? Perhps any driver should be renamed for help???

    Thanks and greetings Yours Ralf

    Hi

Yes I am able to record the picture & audio signal received via the SB Audigy & I run no background CL software while doing this as far as Im aware - I just connect via studio 8 and do the make tape command as you explained to me and it sends the signal through when I play it - though have to wait for the signal to initialise through the 5100 before it allows to record.

Ralf - my hair is falling out here!

Of course I don't know of any software that emulates a camcorder's control signal otherwise I wouldn't have started this thread - I am asking if anyone DOES have this sort of thing as Pioneer couldn't care less whether the 5100 works with my RexRT Pro or not.

Sorry but I have no solutions only questions regarding this device.

    U2,
I am a huge step further.
I used standard firewire-pci-card as shown, XP standars as before. One slot connected to SonyD8-camcorder, which is set to "play(VCR)"-mode. Other slot connected to 5100 which is set to "DV" as the program.
I started Studio8 as before and told it "make a movie"/"create a tape". Movie started and was to seen on my TV screen without any overlaying menues.
Then I did not start the DV-recording-menu of 5100 as always before. I just pressed the "TV DIRECT COPY"-button on the 5100´s remote controller - and message appeared on TV screen that 5100 does record now.
Could not believe but true in fact (my happiest face etc.).
So: the 5100 needs contact to a camcorder with this combination as before. But does not start the camcoder when recording - so camcorder will not wear out for this manner.
Chris, try in this direction, hope You get finally the bewished effort.
majacmad, thank You for Your hints - without I would never ... and so on. Thank You.
m, with both the camcorder and the 5100 connected to one fw-card, I get the movie right out to camcorder too. But not inside Studio8. Don´t know why. But I will continue trying with other software and give report when signs of effort will appear. I stay interested in this function too.
Again, the discussion with all up and down has helped me so much - great with You both.
    Keep on moving -
    Yours
    Ralf

    Ralf - thanks for update.

I still do not know whether a firewire card would assist me as my signal must come from the RexRT Pro or else how would I get my video out to the 5100 - the video would not pass through the OHCI firewire card even if I got one - would it?

Unless you know of a PCI firewire card that has 2 dv ports I could maybe then loop the signal in/out of that card and see if it works??

    cheers Chris

Spoke to a dozen people in electrical stores in Tottenham Ct Rd central London today - all suspect driver problems or lack of certain drivers with regard to this issue as Firewire is standard signal - possibly capture software change - still feeling like wasted £600 on this recorder now though as cant get any signal out of it via dv to pc's dv card.

What capture software other than studio 8 are you using?

What if we all return our Pioneer 5100 to the retailker and the retailer complains to Pioneer - then something might be done?? I am certain that a firmware upgrade by Pioneer would solve this, absolutely certain.

ASKDirect will give me a refund - I just didn't want the hassle of returning it to be replaced by what?

Chris, I´m not sure to have understood your last questions quite right.
My firewire-cards both have three slots per piece. Unfortunately they are un-branded. Chips and drivers I have posted.
Both these cards are able to receive DV signal in (from Rex) and "loop" (hope thats what You mean) this to the next slot out to 5100.
Third slot should carry a signal "in" from Your Sony DV recorder. Think will be "mixed" to the Rex´s signal out. If I were You, I would try such card in extra PC or perhaps same PC; does this function?
This is not the direct way You are originally searching for.

Well - I come to the conclusion it's all about drivers - as Ive not had any signal whatsoever from the 5100 dv direct to pc firewire until.....

I decided to try another capture program & downloaded the trial for adobe premiere pro - loaded it up & I got a direct feed from my 5100 to firewire = perfect picture & sound. Now here's the snag - the signal I was sending from my 5100 HDD was of a NTSC clip I had recorded???????? Now Pioneer told me that the 5100 doesnt transmit NTSC though the DV out port?????? and when I try putting a PAL signal through using the same adobe premiere trial software - guess what - it causes an illegal operation - wont accept PAL signal. Also now with the Adobe drivers onboard, studio 8 also picks up the NTSC out signal - but also fails to take the PAL!!

There is something seriously messed up with this player/recorder!!

P.s. I got my player from Harp/Ask shop also Chris!!!

    Hi Chris
Just got your message - cant call just now have company - but I plan to be calling pioneer back on Monday & ask the engineer again to confirm that the DV port doesnt playback NTSC then tell him what I got.

    01753 789 806 Richard Fraser (Pioneer UK)

I know for a fact my Pioneer DVR7000 wont playback NTSC though the DV port - so seems they must be fitting these machines with contradictory devices that make the machines incompatible.

I just un-installed Adobe premier & it's still playing back to the firewire NTSC but no PAL.

Though connecting it 4pin to 4 pin DV from 5100 to 7000 it does transfer PAL signal ?????

Check this link - it shows the inside of the 5100, showing a cheap DVR A06, pile of sh!t!!!

    [bold]http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/archive/t192334.html[/bold]

Chris, can you do me a favour - can you please check your playback direct to the PC to see if yours is sending both PAL/NTSC or just one of them? Just so I dont make a fool of myself on Monday when I have it out with them, because I just might be drivers short of PAL playback on the PC ....

I'll see what I can do.

One thing. When I was trying to get a signal (dv) into my Sony Vaio laptop from the Pioneer the Sony said 'ntsc' signal from the external device and your project is set to PAL'

Rubbish! The Pioneer is supposed to be PAL according to my set up. So the Pioneer seems to have been built and programmed by a moron.

    Exactly!!!
I do everything I can to set it to PAL capture on my software & still it reverts to saying NTSC 29fps - when I go back after capturing!!

    Yep.
You are right and few hours faster.#

Connected 5100 DV out to one of the slots of my fw-card (3 slots). Connected my Sony Dig8 camcorder to the second slot of the same fw-card. Without driving any video software on the camcorders screen the picture and sound of the 5100 is to be watched correctly (Chris, this kind of fw-cards seem to "loop" also in this direction, my PCI card I bought at "Conrad" but surely they have changed the supplier 27 times since then. PCMCIA-card is "ST Lab IEEE 1394 Firewire Mod. CB-FW1394 made in China "). So DV out of 5100 is ... working.

    Then I tried video software.

Studio8: receives/records distorted pictures. The record options switch automatically to "NTSC" input, whether I force "PAL" or not.

SceenalyzerLive Trial (last week´s edition" gives a message: "Problem: driver sends PAL pictures as NTSC or NTSC pictures as PAL. Maybe You should reinstall directx." Hope I translated this correctly to english.

MotionDVStudio Vers. 3.5L21: receives and records pictures absolutely correct. But this program is translated to german so faulty that I don´t know what or where to set options or how they could be set. Ahh: it places grey fields into the pics - but the rest is o.k. The program came to me with the Tosh Sat, so maybe it is a trial version???

    MediaStudio7 Trial newest: no efforts.

I think it´s fact that our three 5100 devices give out NTSC from DV slot.

German forum tells that a firmware update is coming soon. But I find little information there about the DV In/Out problem. I will mail again with tokoerber.
Look at http://www.dvdboard.de/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=65311 but in german.

btw: dv out of 5100 carries only video material from HDD and own DVD, no material from built-in tuner or from svhs/composite inputs - as far as I experienced.

That is correct!! only way to overcome this is by using the Canopus advc100 through the svhs out then you can direct record from tuner!!

So I take it Ralf you an only get a NTSC signal into the PC with direct firewire transfer also?

Must say that the NTSC signal I do get into Studio 8 - is crystal clear!! but obviously this is wrong so regardless of that Im still unhappy lol I want pure PAL (what the player is supposed to transmit)going direct from 5100 to PC firewire card - we shall see what occurs hopefully there will be a firmware update soon!! I know the 3100 has already had one to do with the videoplus update on that system.

I'll be calling pioneer regardless tomorrow ....
