I made my first ever backup today of Band of Honour 1:1 to DVD-R using Verbatim 4X media.Burn speed 2x, using a Sony DVD DW-U18A.

Software used - AnyDVD, Nero Recode 2 then I burned with Nero Burning ROM6. The backup seemed to go smoothly and theree were no log errors on completion.

However, when I try the disk in a stand alone player, the disk plays up to the point where you get to the menu screen, but when I select any part from the menu, I get a message on the tv screen saying 'Video Removed'

I have tried to play the disc on a Sony Standalone DVD 905 and also an LG plaver and both come up with this message.

If somebody could help me out with this, I would be very grateful.

Does it play on your PC using a Basic DVD Player program? (Not using Nero Showtime)

    Like on PowerDVD or WinDVD?

    Denzien,

Thanks 4 the reply. I have WinDVD on my PC so I'll try to play the backup on that when I get home after work.

I guess I should have tried that first, but just didn't think of it (I'm learning all the time). Will let you know how I get on...........

    Denzien,

I played the backup on WinDVD and it was exactly the same as on the stand alone players that I tried - it played audio and visual right up to the menu screen, but as soon as I selected the option to view the movie from the menu, the display came up with the message 'Video Removed'........whats going on?????!!!

I think you removed the video while you were processing in Recode. That is the message that appears on your backup when you elect to disable a title.
If you select the disable item button:
A Disable Item" screen pops up and a "To maintain DVD compatibility, please select method of deletion:" menu appears. The first choice is "Custom Picture" this is a picture of a strip of film with the text "this video has been removed".

Just a guess, but that is the most likely cause. It seems that somehow you selected the disable button and then selected OK. The main title must have been highlighted at the time so it was this title that was accidentally removed.

Recode keeps the video structure of your backup intact by disabling selected titles and replacing them with still pictures or color screens. This replacement title acts as a small filler.
Normally something like like trailers or FBI warnings are replaced. The whole purpose of this is to keep the menu working properly.
Doing it to the main title sure defeats that though.
Try it again and see if I'm wrong.

    Cheers,
    Frank

    Fasfrank,

I'll give that backup burn another try as soon as I can but I can't at the moment.......I have now tried three different demo downloads of Nero 6 and each time I install the prog it works fine that day and then expires the following day. It's just expired AGAIN!..........so much for a 28 day trial!!

The 'Techs' at Nero sales are looking into this for me and will hopefully find a solution soon. 'till then I'll just have to wait before I try to back that disk up again. I'll let you know how I get on.

    Cheers,

    Dave.

    Fasfrank,

Still waiting for Nero to get back to me (fair do's as it is a weekend), but in the meantime, I've been playing about a couple of new programmes that I downloaded this morning:

AnyDVD - to run in the background decripting
DVD Shrink 3.1 - for the 1:1 task
    DVD Decrypter purely to burn

I have had good results with this combination and no problems with PC or 'Standalone' playback of the backups. Having said that I have nothing to compare this setup to at the moment!

What d'you reackon-do you think that the overall quality of the movie would be even better using AnyDVD/Recode 2/Nero Burning ROM 6 rather that the combination that I have just used, or should I adopt the 'if it aint broken then don't fix it' aproach?

You should be fine with DVDShrink. Recode and Shrink are basically identical in vid quality. You don't even need AnyDVD with Shrink, it rips just fine on it's own (99% of the time). If you find the ocaissonal DVD that it has problems ripping, use DVDDecrypter (free). Nero 6 does lots of things, but there's no reason to get it only for Recode.

    Dave,

I've used both Shrink and Recode to compress with and really cannot tell the difference between the two. You can keep the menu using Recode but I generally don't.

The Shrink /Decrypter method is very easy and reliable. A friend of mine decided he wanted to back up up his entire DVD collection which must be around 200 DVDs. He borrowed my Pioneer A-06 and bought 200 Memorex and Ritek -Rs.

I spent about an hour or so downloading Shrink and Decrypter and showing him how the programs work.
He backed up his entire collection in less than two weeks without a single coaster.

He used a Lite-on JLMS HD166S ROM and got rip times in the 10 to 15 minute range, my Pioneer would then burn at 4X in about 14 minutes. His computer is a Gateway 2.8 GB P4 with 512 MB of RAM and a 120 GB hard drive. 25 to 35 minutes per copy!

With just these two programs and no computer experience he knocked out 200 DVDs in 10 days. I still have to help him with defragmenting and disc clean-up, he is a true newbie.

The point of this is to emphasize that simplicity can equate to success and that once you establish a method that works well for you, stay with it.

The method I showed my friend was to open the disc in Shrink, re-author, selecting the main movie only and removing un-needed audio and sub-pictures. The box to launch Decrypter was checked.

    Cheers,
    Frank

    Fasfrank/MysticE,

Thanks to both of you for the good advice. Being FREE, I reackon I am now quite attached to Shrink and Decriptor!. Might buy Nero 6 for the benefit of some of the bolt on extras like PC backup, etc (when I have had a chance to try the demo out properly...), but at the mo, I am happy with the formula that I am using right now (Shrink & Decriptor) 'till I gain more experience on this burning thing!.

Fasfrank - Nice chioce of bike. The very bike that I used to own, but I had to give it up as I was caught speeding three times in the same year. It's a bike thats too much fun to ride sensibly in my humble opinion!!. :)

I raced group A Motocross in the U.K. for 15 years until 2 years ago.RM250. Oh well, guess that means that i aint ever going to beat you in top gear!

    All the best,

    Dave.

    Hi again Dave,

The full suite of Nero is nice to have just for the variety of things you can do with it. Reasonably good guides are available at the Nero website, the support folks are responsive and the programs are updated often.
I find the programs to be pretty useful, especially after installing the latest version. I have a camcorder now as well as a digital camera so I use Nerovision Express 2 to capture and assemble with.

The beta version of DVD Lab pro is available for free downloading from www.mediachance.com This program is the best for creating various menus and complex DVD structure. There is a bit of learning to do but you can certainly provide yourself with an education by getting to know this program.

I know what you mean about the bike! I would expect some jail time at the speed this thing is capable of. I have been lucky on the occasions I have let it rip a bit. I normally don't do that when I ride it. Sometimes though...

I rode on an a team last year with the same type of bike and we were seeing speeds in excess of 180 MPH. It is completely different doing it in a controlled racetrack environment. I think I saw 155 on the street bike once. That was enough! Normally I just ride it at or a bit over the speed limit, but it's like having a Formula 1 car on the highway. It just begs for the gas!

    Happy burning,
    Frank

    Fasfank,

Shrink and Decriptor (excellent programes) aside, I'm Gonna get nero, and I'll reackon I'll like it, inspite of my previous thread.

Bikes:-Yeah,that sounds Familiar.Big time, as follows-

    1:)Three points on license,2:) same again, 3:-(

3, (above) = License 'looked after' by the 'friendly' local police for 12 months!!!. Damn I miss bikes! . Anyway, ride carefully. I didnt. Also, I never did learn to clear that 60 foot double jump every time(motocross) in West sussex (U.K) without breaking anything, including my bank balance!. Money's nothing when you are having fun..

Anyway, If you hang out in the other threads, it'll B good 2 Catch up you there sometime. When I learn enough 'bout this burning stuff, I'll be looking at hopefully burning JPG photos to DVD-R/DVD-RW to play on a stand alone DVD player and stuff like that. I have a Minolta Dimage 7 DIG Camera. I guess that it's possible to burn the images of the photos onto a DVD to display on a TV... I'll look at the threads/guides on this site (excellent site).

Now I've got this thing (DVD backup) working, I reackon I'd like to experiment with Nero Recode/burning 6 when I have the opportuniy. Sounds like I nearly had the right idea when I first used it (before the demo expired B4 it should have!).Will follow your original advice as soon as I am able to load Nero up for real. I like the idea of the 'system bakup' utility in Nero plus all of the other extras in the suite, and if I bought it, I might as well use Recode 2 and Burning ROM if I am going to own the full retail version.

In the meantime, I want to get into creating DVD JPEG Photos to display on the TV. That will at least keep me out of the local boozer for a little while longer........

Take it easy and pop a wheelie on my behalf!

    Dave.
