I have been using a lite-on 4x dvd burner for a number of years and recently decided to move up the modern day age of 16x burning. I purchased an I/O Magic IDVD168DL and some Memorex 16x DVD-R. I burned a few discs, then I had a problem with the burn process freezing in the middle. I reduced the burn speed and got a few to work, then the same problem occurred. Reduced the speed further, got a a few to work, the same problem. Then I couldn't burn or rip anything. I then gave up on that drive and bought another brand at Best Buy. I can't remember the brand and can't locate teh receipt right now, but it was another $40 dollar on sale model. Went through the exact same routine and had the same results of early success and then failure. Now I am back to the lite on and can only get the 4x media to burn at 2x speed. I am using the latest shrink and nero 6.3.1.10. I would appreciate any help on figuring out what the problem is. I would liek to pick up a burner that can consistently burn at 16x. Thanks
I think the second drive may have been a Pioneer DVR-710B5PK. I would really like to avoid buying and returning anymore drives or media, so any help would be appreciated. THanks
Well at first glance I can pretty much place your problem. [bold]Media.[/bold] Memorex media is some of worst available. It's not surprising you've had trouble burning. You want to look out for Sony MIJ's (made in japan), Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. Those brands are the best, however slightly more expensive, but worth it nevertheless. BTW, even with a 16x burner it is recommended you only urn at 8x MAX. Also, follow the instructions here to update your drives firmware. Firmware = tells your drive about new disk codes so it can burn to them. EDIT: The Pioneer is a better drive, I suggest you use that one. It is actually the North American version of a DVR 111D (a very good drive)!
